The highly anticipated movie ‘Godezilla vs. Kong’ didn’t fail to please audiences, as it exceeded all expectations and is by far the biggest film since the pandemic hit.
The film remained atop the domestic box office once again on its third weekend, when it added another $7.7 million, bolstering its tally to $80.5 million North American.
One may recall that the movie nabbed $48.5 million in its first five days and made a global tally of $285.4 million. Prior to the movie’s opening weekend, Wonder Woman 1984” generated $16.7 million, while “Tom and Jerry” garnered $14 million.
The results have given a boost of confidence for a lot of anxious Hollywood studios and theater owners, who are wondering if the film industry will ever recover from what it has lost during the pandemic.
David A. Gross, who runs the movie consultancy FranchiseRe, reckoned that the film could have stomped to $50 million on it’s three-day weekend and $500 million worldwide if it had not been for COVID-19.
“While it’s half of what it would be under normal circumstances, the weekend is a clear and positive indication that moviegoing has inherent strengths that aren’t going away, including going out for the group experience; the big screen quality; and the value for cost,” Gross stated.
‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ was also available on HBO Max, which is a stand alone streaming platform service that sells monthly subscriptions for $15.
