More than two decades after The Passion of the Christ captivated audiences worldwide, director Mel Gibson is set to bring its long-awaited sequel to life. The Resurrection of Christ is scheduled to begin filming this August at Cinecittà Studios in Rome, with additional locations in southern Italy, including Altamura, Ginosa, Gravina Laterza, and Matera.
Gibson’s 2004 film was a cinematic phenomenon, earning over $370 million at the box office and becoming the highest-grossing R-rated film of its time. Now, with The Resurrection of Christ, the director is venturing into the profound events that followed the crucifixion.
Jim Caviezel, who delivered a powerful performance as Jesus in The Passion of the Christ, is expected to reprise his role, ensuring continuity with the original film’s intense and emotional storytelling.
CEO of Cinecittà Studios, Manuela Cacciamani, confirmed the production’s plans, stating, “The next film directed by Mel Gibson, produced by Icon Productions, will be shot entirely in Cinecittà starting in August and requires many theaters and stage constructions.”
While many details remain under wraps, anticipation is already building for what is expected to be an ambitious and visually stunning depiction of the son of God, Christ’s resurrection.
In recent interviews, Gibson has hinted at the film’s unique approach, describing the script as unlike anything he has ever read. “There’s some crazy stuff,” he shared, adding that the story will explore spiritual realms, including Sheol and the fall of the angels.
These elements suggest that the sequel will not only depict Jesus’ return from the grave but also provide a deeper, more expansive look into the unseen spiritual battle surrounding His resurrection.
Gibson has acknowledged the challenges of bringing this vision to the screen. “It’s not going to be easy,” he admitted in a discussion with podcaster Joe Rogan. “It’s super ambitious, but I’ll take a crack at it.” Given the scale of the story, Caviezel has even speculated that the project could be split into two or more films.
As one of the most highly anticipated biblical films in recent years, The Resurrection of Christ has the potential to surpass even its predecessor. Caviezel has boldly claimed, “It will be the biggest film in history.” With a devoted fan base and a director known for his commitment to authenticity, the film could redefine faith-based cinema once again.
Gibson has been working on the project for years, refining the script to ensure that it does justice to the significance of Christ’s resurrection. “It’s a huge subject,” he explained in a past interview. “It’s not just a linear narrative—you have to juxtapose the central event with everything else around it, in the past and in the future.”
With filming set to begin this summer, audiences eagerly await the return of this powerful biblical epic. Whether through stunning cinematography, emotional performances, or deep theological themes, The Resurrection of Christ promises to be a cinematic experience like no other.
