The documentary follows several individuals from diverse backgrounds, each facing their unique challenges and triumphs. Through their stories, Diaz captures the resilience, hope, and indomitable spirit of the Filipino people.

The film opens with a powerful montage of everyday life in the Philippines—bustling streets filled with vendors, children playing in vibrant neighborhoods, and families gathering for meals. Each character’s journey is interwoven with stunning cinematography that highlights both the beauty and struggles of life in the archipelago.

The decision to nominate “And So It Begins” was made after extensive discussions within the Film Academy of the Philippines. Director Joey Reyes emphasized that this year’s selection process was particularly rigorous, with numerous films vying for the honor. Ultimately, it was Diaz’s ability to blend personal stories with universal themes that resonated most with the selection committee.

Ramona Diaz is no stranger to acclaim in the world of documentary filmmaking. With a career spanning over two decades, she has directed several award-winning films that have garnered international recognition. Her previous works include “Imelda,” which delves into the life of former First Lady Imelda Marcos, and “A Thousand Cuts,” which chronicles journalist Maria Ressa’s fight for press freedom in the Philippines.
