God’s Hatred for Sin and His Love for Sinners

SHARE
The message of the Bible is clear and consistent: God absolutely detests sin, yet He deeply loves the sinner. This divine paradox—hatred for evil, yet compassion for people—runs through Scripture like a golden thread, revealing both the justice and mercy of God. It’s not a contradiction, but a powerful expression of His holiness and grace.
From the very beginning, God has made His stance on sin clear. In Proverbs 6:16-19, we read: “There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him…” The list includes pride, lies, and a heart that devises wicked schemes.
God’s hatred for sin is rooted in His purity—He is holy, and sin, by its nature, corrupts, deceives, and destroys. In Isaiah 59:2, the prophet writes, “But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you.”
Yet even as sin separates, God draws near. His love for the sinner is perhaps most beautifully captured in Romans 5:8: “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” It wasn’t when we cleaned ourselves up or did something righteous. It was in our lowest, dirtiest moment that Christ came near.
This love is not passive—it moves, it acts, it sacrifices. John 3:16 remains the most quoted verse for good reason: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son…” The cross was not an afterthought. It was the ultimate expression of both God’s hatred for sin and love for sinners. At Calvary, sin was punished, and mercy was poured out.
Jesus Himself made a clear distinction between sin and the sinner. When He met the woman caught in adultery (John 8:1-11), He did not condone her actions. He said, “Go now and leave your life of sin.” Yet before that, He protected her from condemnation. Christ’s mission was not to shame, but to save.
Today, that same love reaches out. God is not indifferent to our struggles or blind to our brokenness. He hates what sin does to us—how it ruins relationships, distorts truth, and leads to death. But in His love, He offers us a way out: repentance, forgiveness, and new life in Jesus.
In a world quick to redefine right and wrong, the Bible reminds us that God’s standards do not change. Yet neither does His love. As 2 Peter 3:9 says, “He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”
God’s hatred for sin is fierce. But His love for you is fiercer still.
