The 97th Academy Awards will go ahead as planned on March 2, 2025, despite the ongoing devastation caused by wildfires in the Los Angeles region. The Motion Picture Academy confirmed the news after careful deliberations with ABC, the Academy’s board, and key stakeholders within the Los Angeles and film communities.
In a statement, Academy Chief Executive Officer Bill Kramer emphasized that the decision was made after consultations with all involved parties.
While there had been speculation that the event might be postponed or canceled, especially in light of other awards shows being affected by the fires, the Academy has remained resolute. In fact, the Oscars are set to not only celebrate films but also honor the bravery and resilience of those who have fought the wildfires.
As Kramer stated, “This year’s ceremony will include special moments acknowledging those who fought so bravely against the wildfires. We feel that we must go forward to support our film community and to use our global platform to bring attention to these critical moments in our history.”
The Los Angeles wildfires have caused extensive damage, with many areas still recovering. Some had voiced concerns that hosting such a high-profile event during this time could be inappropriate, given the scale of the disaster. However, the Academy remains firm in its stance.
As Kramer put it, “The spirit of Los Angeles and our film community has always been one of resilience, and the Oscars represent not just a celebration of film, but the industry’s strength and unity in the face of adversity.”
In addition to acknowledging the fires, the Academy has made adjustments to the lead-up to the ceremony. Changes to the voting calendar, such as an extended voting window and a delayed announcement of the nominations until January 23, have been implemented.
The Academy canceled this year’s Oscar Nominees Luncheon and indefinitely postponed the Scientific and Technical Awards ceremony. It donated the $250,000 luncheon cost to the Motion Picture & Television Fund to aid those affected by the Los Angeles wildfires.
The decision to move forward with the Oscars is a testament to the enduring power of the film industry in Los Angeles. The city, which has long been at the heart of global cinema, has shown remarkable resilience in the face of countless challenges. The Oscars, as the pinnacle of recognition in the entertainment world, will now serve as a reflection of that resilience.

With the event’s continued success despite the difficult circumstances, the 2025 Oscars will surely be remembered as a celebration of both film and community. The ceremony will stand as a reminder that, even in times of crisis, the spirit of creativity and unity endures.
As Los Angeles rises from the ashes, the Academy Awards will shine as a beacon of strength and solidarity, symbolizing the city’s undying commitment to both its craft and its people.
