The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) is set to revolutionize its weather forecasting capabilities by integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, a move announced by Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Renato Solidum.

This initiative aims to enhance the accuracy and frequency of weather predictions, crucial for a country often impacted by severe weather events.

Currently, PAGASA provides weather updates every three hours. With the implementation of AI, the agency aims to reduce this interval to just 15 minutes, allowing for more timely and relevant information dissemination.

Secretary Solidum emphasized that this technological upgrade would enable PAGASA to extend its forecast range from the current five days to 14 days, significantly improving the ability to predict weather disturbances and their potential impacts.

During a Senate budget hearing, Solidum stated, “Soon we will operate, for our research program, to use artificial intelligence in weather forecasting. We are aiming to provide a forecast every 15 minutes.”

This shift not only reflects a commitment to technological advancement but also addresses the unique challenges of forecasting in an archipelago, where weather patterns can be unpredictable and localized.

Despite the ambitious plans, PAGASA faces challenges in its monitoring infrastructure. Currently, the agency operates 19 Doppler radars, but only 11 are fully operational. Solidum noted the need for additional radars to improve monitoring capabilities, stating, “It is easier to forecast the weather in a continent compared to an archipelago.”

The integration of AI is expected to complement existing systems and enhance the quality of forecasts, making them more impactful.

The AI-driven approach will focus on impact-based forecasting, which not only predicts whether it will rain but also assesses the potential effects of rainfall, enabling better preparedness and response strategies across various sectors, including aviation and maritime industries.

The DOST, under Secretary Solidum’s leadership, is committed to modernizing PAGASA’s capabilities. The introduction of AI into weather forecasting aligns with global trends in meteorology, where advanced technologies are increasingly used to analyze vast datasets for improved accuracy. This modernization effort reflects a broader strategy to enhance disaster preparedness and response in the Philippines, a nation frequently affected by natural disasters.

The integration of AI technology into PAGASA’s forecasting systems represents a significant step forward for the agency and the Philippines as a whole. With Secretary Renato Solidum at the helm, this initiative promises to deliver more accurate and timely weather information, ultimately improving public safety and resilience against adverse weather conditions. As the project develops, it will be exciting to witness how these advancements reshape the landscape of meteorology in the Philippines.
