History was made at the Vatican as Cardinal Robert Prevost of the United States was elected the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church, taking the papal name Leo XIV. The announcement from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica on May 8, 2025, was met with loud cheers of “Viva il Papa” from the gathered crowd, marking a new chapter in Church history.

At 69 years old, Pope Leo XIV becomes the first American-born pope, but his deep ties to Latin America give his leadership a global and cross-cultural resonance.

Born in Chicago in 1955 to a family of Spanish and Franco-Italian heritage, Prevost grew up immersed in the Catholic faith. He served as an altar boy and was ordained as an Augustinian priest in 1982. His life took a pivotal turn when, at age 30, he began missionary work in Peru.

Over the next decade, he worked closely with communities in Trujillo, serving both as a parish pastor and a seminary teacher. His dedication to service and humility earned him local respect, and he eventually became Bishop of Chiclayo. In recognition of his leadership, Pope Francis appointed him prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops in 2023 and elevated him to the rank of cardinal shortly thereafter.

Despite his American roots, Leo XIV is seen as a continuation of Pope Francis’ Latin American pastoral approach. His years in Peru shaped his deep concern for the marginalized and the poor. Known for his reserved and thoughtful demeanor, he is described by longtime friends as humble, service-oriented, and not one to seek the spotlight. As a result, his election was both a surprise and a natural progression, considering the influence of Francis-appointed cardinals in the conclave.

In his first public address as pope, Leo XIV paid heartfelt tribute to his predecessor, acknowledging the courage and vision of Pope Francis. “United and hand in hand with God, let us advance together,” he said from the Vatican balcony, setting the tone for a pontificate rooted in unity and pastoral care.

The choice of the name “Leo” carries historical significance. It evokes the legacy of Leo XIII, known for his encyclicals on social justice during the industrial revolution. Analysts believe the new pope’s choice reflects a desire to remain engaged with critical global concerns, such as economic equity and care for creation. Indeed, Pope Leo XIV has spoken about environmental stewardship and the Vatican’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint.

As the first Augustinian to hold the papacy, Leo XIV brings a unique spiritual tradition to the Church’s highest office. His leadership style is expected to be marked by consultation, discernment, and continuity with recent reforms. While much of the world sees him as an American pope, those close to him emphasize his broader worldview—a leader shaped by mission, humility, and service across cultures.

Pope Leo XIV now begins his papacy at a time of immense global challenges, but also of renewed hope for the Catholic Church.
