What can Christians learn from Jesus being anointed at Bethany? Explore the Bible story’s message on faith and devotion.

The story of Jesus being anointed at Bethany is one of the most emotional and meaningful moments recorded in the Bible. Found in passages such as Matthew 26:6–13 and John 12:1–8, the event takes place shortly before Jesus begins His journey toward the cross. While many people saw an expensive act of devotion, Jesus saw something much deeper—an expression of faith, love, and spiritual understanding.

For Christians today, this moment offers valuable lessons about worship, sacrifice, and recognizing the true identity of Christ. It also reminds us that following God sometimes requires actions that others may not immediately understand.

A Heart of Worship Matters to Jesus

In Bethany, a woman identified in John’s gospel as Mary poured expensive perfume on Jesus. Some of the disciples criticized the act, arguing that the perfume could have been sold and the money given to the poor. Yet Jesus defended her and honored what she had done.

As written in Matthew 26:10, Jesus said, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me.”

Mary’s act was deeply personal and sacrificial. The perfume was extremely valuable, yet she willingly offered it to Jesus without expecting anything in return. Her actions reflected genuine worship rather than religious performance.

This story reminds the church today that worship is not only about songs, routines, or public appearances. True worship flows from a sincere heart. Through prayer, obedience, and devotion, we are called to honor Jesus wholeheartedly. Sometimes faith requires giving God our best even when others do not fully understand the reason behind it.

Spiritual Understanding Goes Beyond Appearances

Another powerful lesson from this story is the importance of spiritual awareness. While some disciples focused on the financial value of the perfume, Mary recognized the spiritual significance of the moment. Jesus explained that her act prepared Him for burial, pointing toward His coming sacrifice on the cross.

John 12:7 records Jesus saying, “Leave her alone. It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial.”

At a time when many people in Israel still misunderstood His mission, Mary appeared to grasp the seriousness of what was about to happen. Her response reflected sensitivity to the Holy Spirit and trust in God’s greater plan.

For modern Christians, this serves as a reminder that spiritual discernment is essential. Not everything can be measured through practicality or human logic alone. The gospel often challenges worldly thinking by calling us to act in love, humility, and surrender.

Devotion Leaves a Lasting Impact

Jesus concluded the story by saying that what the woman had done would be remembered wherever the gospel is preached. Her simple act of devotion became part of the larger story of salvation and faith.

This truth encourages us  that small acts done for Jesus are never wasted. Whether through serving others, supporting the church, encouraging fellow disciples, or living faithfully in everyday life, God sees every act of sincere devotion.

The story of Jesus being anointed at Bethany ultimately points back to Christ Himself. It reminds us that Jesus is worthy of honor, sacrifice, and complete trust. In a world filled with distractions and competing priorities, this passage calls Christians to remain focused on what matters most—a life centered on faith in God and devotion to Jesus.
