The 2024 Golden Globes Awards dazzled audiences worldwide with a night filled with glamour, heartfelt speeches, and unexpected twists.
Despite the challenges faced by the entertainment industry, this star-studded event managed to captivate viewers and celebrate outstanding achievements in film and television.
One of the most striking aspects of the 2024 Golden Globes was the recognition of diversity and inclusion in both nominations and wins. The industry took a step forward in acknowledging and celebrating a broader range of voices and perspectives.
This shift was reflected in the diverse array of nominees and the winners who walked away with prestigious awards. Red carpet fashion always plays a significant role in the Golden Globes, and 2024 was no exception. Celebrities showcased their unique styles, making bold statements with their fashion choices.
The evening celebrated individuality and creativity, with fashion becoming an integral part of the overall spectacle. But certainly, and considered one of the highlights, the 2024 Golden Globes will be remembered for comedian Jo Koy‘s viral joke, which stirred a mix of reactions on social media.
Despite the controversy, the event saw a notable increase in ratings, showcasing the public’s enduring fascination with the convergence of entertainment and pop culture. The 2024 Golden Globe Awards, broadcasted live on CBS on Sunday, January 7, garnered an average of 9.4 million viewers, marking a 50% increase compared to the previous year.
According to Nielsen’s time zone-adjusted fast national ratings for Sunday, including out-of-home viewership, the show achieved its highest audience since 2020. The Golden Globes achieved the most extensive live-streamed viewership for an awards ceremony on Paramount+ and other CBS platforms since the 65th annual Grammy Awards in February 2023.
It stands as the second-largest livestreamed special event on Paramount+ for CBS, both in terms of average minute audience (AMA) and overall reach. The Golden Globes took center stage on social media during Sunday night, generating almost 30 billion potential impressions and securing the top spot as the most interacted-with program of the night.
In the era of decreasing viewership for traditional television, award shows have faced challenges in maintaining their previous audience numbers. The Golden Globes, in particular, encountered difficulties exacerbated by their own actions.
Following revelations from The Los Angeles Times about the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) lacking Black members, the entertainment industry boycotted the organization, leading to the removal of the 2022 Globes from the airwaves.
In 2023, the awards returned for a one-year trial with NBC, but the network, which had been the long-time home for the Globes, ultimately decided not to continue airing the show.
After exploring various broadcast options, including potential partnerships with streaming platforms, CBS recently agreed to broadcast this year’s Golden Globes.
Back to Jo Koy, he actually made history as the first Filipino-American to host the Golden Globe Awards this year. Born, Washington, Jo Koy, also known as Joseph Glenn Herbert Sr. in Tacoma, is a son of a white American father and a Filipina mother.
Jo Koy gained recognition as a panelist on the late-night show Chelsea Lately on E! and has made appearances in specials on Comedy Central and Netflix. It appeared that multi-Grammy award-winning American singer and songwriter Taylor Swift was annoyed by the joke made by Filipino-American comedian.
Jo Koy asked the audience what the difference was between the mentioned awarding ceremony and the National Football League. “The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? At the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift,” he said.
After saying this, the camera immediately focused on Taylor Swift, revealing the singer’s reaction that seemed displeased or unhappy while sipping her drink. “I’m sorry about that,” Jo Koy quickly said after seeing the facial expression of the award-winning singer.
Because of this, Jo Koy received a barrage of criticism from netizens due to the mentioned joke, especially from Swifties. In a social media post, Jo Koy mentioned that he simply follows the punchlines written in the script by his scriptwriter.
On Monday’s episode of ABC’s “GMA3,” Koy admitted that he would not be truthful if he claimed that the criticism “doesn’t hurt.” “It’s a tough room. And it was a hard job, I’m not going to lie,” said Koy, who had just 10 days to prepare before the awarding ceremony.
“Getting that gig, and then having the amount of time that we had to prepare — that was a crash course.”
A number of netizens, especially Filipinos, came to the defense of fellow netizens who were criticizing Jo Koy. It was mentioned that Jo Koy was once celebrated as a source of “Pinoy Pride,” but with a single mistake, it was claimed that all the positive things he had done, particularly in representing the Filipino community abroad, were quickly erased.
But in spite of this “brouhaha,” the 2024 Golden Globes Awards proved to be a glittering success, honoring the best in film and television while navigating the challenges of the times.
With its blend of star-studded moments, unexpected wins, and powerful messages, the event showcased the resilience and creativity of the entertainment industry.
The winners used their platform to address meaningful issues, making powerful statements about social justice, diversity, and inclusion. From heartfelt expressions of gratitude to impassioned calls for change, the speeches resonated with viewers and emphasized the impact that art and storytelling can have on society.
As the curtain fell on another memorable Golden Globes ceremony, audiences were left eagerly anticipating what the future holds for the world of entertainment.
