The 2025 Critics Choice Awards ceremony, held on February 7, revealed a night of surprises and triumphs, with Anora taking the prestigious Best Picture award. The film, directed by Sean Baker, had been overlooked at the Golden Globes just a month earlier, making its win a major highlight of the evening.

Baker used his acceptance speech to call for greater support of independent films, stressing the importance of keeping local theaters alive, especially in the wake of the pandemic’s impact.

Demi Moore and Adrien Brody were the night’s acting stars, each securing top honors in their respective categories. Moore, at 62, took home Best Actress for her role in The Substance, a body-horror film where she portrays a former Oscar-winning actress who faces discrimination in her career after turning 50.

Her acceptance speech was a heartfelt reflection on her career and the importance of the film’s message. “This has been such a wild ride,” Moore said, expressing gratitude for the recognition.

Adrien Brody, who won Best Actor for his role in The Brutalist, a historical epic, celebrated his ongoing career revival. The actor, best known for his Oscar-winning performance in The Pianist, remarked on the rarity of such moments in an actor’s life, acknowledging that the recognition meant a great deal after years of challenging work.

His win was a key moment for his fans, who have seen him undergo a significant career transformation in recent years.

The Best Supporting Actor award went to Kieran Culkin for his performance in A Real Pain, a dark comedy that also secured the Best Comedy title. Culkin’s win, for his portrayal of a complicated, often unsympathetic character, was well received, cementing his place as a versatile performer in both drama and comedy.

Zoe Saldaña won Best Supporting Actress for Emilia Pérez, a role that highlighted her ability to balance drama and humor in a performance about a woman navigating personal and professional challenges. The film, which also won Best Foreign Language Film, was a major contender throughout the evening.

The evening’s other notable wins included Wicked director Jon M. Chu, who took home Best Director, a category often seen as a precursor to the Academy Awards. Chu’s acceptance speech was playful, as he jokingly declared, “I’m going to win that Oscar!” referencing his recent snub from the Oscar nominations.

In the world of Anora, the film’s unconventional narrative about a romance between an exotic dancer and a Russian heir resonated with critics, making it the surprise winner of Best Picture. This unexpected victory capped off an evening full of reflection, humor, and heartfelt speeches.
