On Friday, January 26, Sky Cable notified its customers that it would cease its cable TV transmission from February 26, 2024. According to a notification sent via text message, Sky Cable, as per ABS-CBN News, mentioned its intention to shift towards becoming a focused internet service provider, as outlined in the closing terms of the PLDT-Sky Cable acquisition deal. This update was also shared on their Facebook page.
“We would like to inform you that in anticipation of and pursuant to the closing conditions of the PLDT-SKY acquisition deal, SKY will now begin its transition into a dedicated internet service provider. Details at https://www.mysky.com.ph/,” it can be read on their Facebook post in the said date.
ABS-CBN Corp. has informed that the Philippine Competition Commission has given the green light for the transfer of Sky Cable’s broadband division and related assets to PLDT Inc. ABS-CBN Corp. further mentioned in a disclosure to the stock market that the deal, involving the sale of all of Sky’s existing capital stock, is subject to various closing conditions.
Sky Cable has assured that cable TV customers won’t face any charges from January 27 until the broadcast concludes on February 26. Meanwhile, Sky Fiber subscribers can expect uninterrupted internet service. For Sky Bundle subscribers, the subscription will be converted to a standalone Sky Fiber plan.
“As we go through these changes, providing assistance and service to you will remain our top priority. Our sincerest thanks to you, our dearest subscribers,” Sky Cable said on their website.
The recent authorization from the PCC paves the way for PLDT’s acquisition of SkyCable, valued at P6.75 billion. It is reported that the funds generated from this deal will be used by the Lopez family to address the debts of ABS-CBN Broadcasting.
Established in 1992, Sky Cable previously held a prominent position as the primary cable provider in the Philippines. Through targeted acquisitions, including Sun Cable, Home Cable, Destiny Cable Inc., Uni-Cable TV Inc., and Solid Broadband Cable, it expanded its market presence significantly over the years.
Netizens and subscribers expressed their goodbye and appreciation message for the cable channel.
“We all know Sky has its negative points BUT that doesn’t mean I will not be a loyal customer to Sky. Thank you for the wonderful 5 yrs Sky here in Manila and wonderful 15 yrs in Cebu!”
“Thanks to 32 years of the best Cable TV that has the best variety programming.”
“Have been a Sky Cable subscriber for almost 14 years. And I have nothing but appreciation for the quality of service you have provided! Good luck!”
“I’ve been with Sky for roughly 4 years. We had a love-hate relationship with the company but I still want to thank them for their services! ❤️💪 I’m hoping the employees will be acquired by PLDT.”
“The end of an era. Thank you for the quality service, Sky!”
“What will happen next? We’ve been Sky Cable viewers since 1998. But if that’s the decision of the management, we can’t do something about it. Thank you for everything, Sky Cable!”
“Thank you for the years of service, Sky Cable.”
ABS-CBN news anchor Tony Velasquez also expressed her gratitude towards the cable channel.
Sky Cable served as the home of ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC), where Velasquez was one of the program hosts.
“It’s been a great ride, 18 years in the saddle… Privileged to have had a front row seat as a witness to major events that have shaped the country. Wherever the winds of change take us, ANC will strive to give its viewers comprehensive news & analyses.”
Even with the absence of Sky Cable, it’s been mentioned that Kapamilya Channel, Cinemo, MYX, and Metro Channel can still be viewed on Cignal, the cable channel owned by Manny Pangilinan, who also owns PLDT. ANC can also be watched via online platforms of ABS-CBN.
