The Day God Was Silent: What Black Saturday Teaches Us About Waiting

A Christian’s Call to Wise Listening

The ability to truly hear another person is becoming rare. Yet, Scripture reminds us that the gift of listening is not merely social—it is spiritual. Proverbs 18:13 warns, “If one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame.” Hasty words spoken without understanding often lead to misunderstandings, conflict, and missed opportunities for God’s wisdom to shine through us.

Wise listening begins with humility. James 1:19 encourages, “Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.” Here, the Lord sets a clear pattern: hearing must precede speaking, and patience must govern our response. When we approach conversations with humility, we position ourselves to learn rather than merely to reply. Often, the impulse to interject comes from pride or the desire to be “right,” but Scripture teaches that wisdom is gained more through absorbing than asserting.

Listening also reflects a heart aligned with God’s purposes. Proverbs 1:5 says, “Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance.” The act of listening opens the door for instruction, correction, and insight. Every encounter is an opportunity for God to speak, whether through the counsel of a friend, a sermon, or even the quiet words of the Holy Spirit in our hearts. When we listen with intention, we invite God’s guidance into our decisions and relationships.

Equally important is discernment. Not every voice carries truth, and not every opinion deserves equal weight. Acts 17:11 highlights the example of the Bereans, who “received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.” A wise listener filters words through the lens of God’s Word, testing advice, encouragement, or warning against the standard of Scripture. This careful evaluation protects us from deception and strengthens our spiritual growth.

Listening is also an act of love. In 1 Corinthians 13, the apostle Paul describes love as patient and kind—qualities that are expressed every time we listen without interruption or judgment. By giving others the gift of undivided attention, we demonstrate care and respect, fostering trust and deeper fellowship. Often, just being heard can bring healing and encouragement to a weary soul.

Wise listening requires prayer. Asking the Lord to guide our ears, hearts, and minds allows His Spirit to sharpen our understanding. Psalm 19:14 prays, “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.” Prayer centers us, reminding us that listening is not only a social skill but also a spiritual discipline.

In every conversation, God calls His people to listen thoughtfully, discern carefully, and respond with grace. By doing so, we reflect His wisdom, honor others, and nurture the kind of relationships that draw us closer to Him. True understanding comes not from speaking more, but from listening well—and in that silence, God’s voice often speaks the loudest.
