In an insightful conversation with Brian Govberg and Tim Mosso, the 2024 novelties from Patek Philippe were thoroughly examined, revealing a year of strategic refinement and subtle innovation for the prestigious watchmaker.
Brian Govberg and Tim Mosso, both esteemed figures in the horology community, shared their perspectives on Patek Philippe’s latest releases. According to Mosso, 2024 felt like a year of transition for Patek Philippe.
“There’s been so much product development in the pipeline over the past three to four years that this year felt like a breather,” Mosso observed. Instead of introducing brand-new models, the focus was on enhancing existing collections with new metal and dial variations, integrated bracelets, and cases.
One of the standout pieces this year is the new Ellipse with an integrated bracelet. “The Ellipse has always been a favorite of mine,” Mosso noted. This model represents a significant step in Patek Philippe’s efforts to refresh their fundamental collection pieces like the Aquanaut, Nautilus, and Ellipse, blending tradition with modernity.
Patek Philippe’s trend towards precious metals continues, particularly in the Aquanaut and Nautilus lines. Mr. Stern’s long-standing intention to minimize the production of steel watches is evident in this year’s releases. Notable among these is the World Time 5330G in white gold, now featuring a date complication.
“It’s now 40mm as opposed to 38.2mm and feels like it will be a long-standing model,” said Mosso. The introduction of new dial colors, such as the digital Perpetual 5236 in salmon, also highlights Patek Philippe’s commitment to subtle yet significant innovation.

The new 5980 with a denim theme, featuring a white gold case, denim-style dial, and strap, embodies a youthful and versatile aesthetic. This model aligns with the industry’s trend towards white metals for sportier watches. “The strap is actually stamped calf, not denim, which gives it more resilience,” Mosso explained, adding that the watch comes with a second, sportier strap, broadening its appeal.

Another noteworthy addition is the 5164G with a blue dial for the Aquanaut Travel Time. “This piece strikes a balance between richness and casual elegance,” Govberg remarked. This model in white gold offers a sophisticated yet approachable look, diverging from the formality of rose gold.
The 5520R in rose gold with lime green lume on a champagne dial stands out with its bold, vintage-inspired design. Mosso highlighted the piece’s striking presence and its accessibility due to a reduced price, making it more appealing to a broader audience.
Brian Govberg and Tim Mosso’s discussion encapsulates a year of thoughtful evolution for Patek Philippe. From the new integrated bracelet Ellipse to the denim-themed 5980, Patek Philippe’s 2024 novelties showcase a blend of tradition and modernity, precious metals, and casual elegance. As Govberg aptly concluded, “This year’s launch was restrained but significant, with exciting things likely coming later in the year.”
