Andy Serkis’ long-anticipated animated adaptation of George Orwell’s Animal Farm has officially found its U.S. theatrical home, with Angel securing distribution ahead of a wide release on May 1, 2026. The acquisition marks another high-profile title for the Utah-based company, formerly known as Angel Studios, as it continues to expand its slate following its public debut earlier this year.
Produced by Adam Nagle and Dave Rosenbaum for Aniventure alongside Jonathan Cavendish of Imaginarium Productions, Animal Farm brings Orwell’s classic allegory to life through high-end CG animation from Cinesite. The film premiered earlier this year at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, where it generated strong industry interest and lively discussion about how the decades-old story translates to a modern animated format.

Serkis, who both directed the film and voices Mr. Jones and Randolph the Rooster, emphasized the enduring relevance of Orwell’s work. He described the story as a cautionary tale about power, propaganda, and moral responsibility, noting that its themes remain urgent in today’s world. According to Serkis, the goal was not only to entertain but also to encourage audiences to reflect on the values of freedom, integrity, and accountability.
The film boasts an impressive voice cast led by Seth Rogen as Napoleon, Glenn Close as Freida Pilkington, Woody Harrelson as Boxer, and Kieran Culkin as Squealer. Additional cast members include Gaten Matarazzo, Jim Parsons, Kathleen Turner, and Iman Vellani, adding depth and personality to the ensemble of farm animals that drive the narrative. Serkis’ involvement both behind and in front of the microphone further reinforces the personal passion he has invested in the project.

Angel executives have expressed confidence that Animal Farm will resonate with moviegoers well beyond traditional animation fans. Brandon Purdie, Angel’s executive vice president of theatrical and brand development, praised the film’s emotional core and Serkis’ visionary approach, describing it as a story that feels timely and deeply human despite its animal protagonists.
Early reactions to the newly unveiled trailer suggest a bold stylistic approach, blending polished animation, contemporary music, and moments of broad humor. While this tone differs from many traditional adaptations of Orwell’s novella, the creative team has made clear that the intention is to connect with today’s audiences while preserving the heart of the original message.

As Angel continues to position itself as a distributor willing to back ambitious and conversation-starting projects, Animal Farm stands out as a notable addition to its growing catalog. With a celebrated director, a star-studded cast, and a release date firmly set, the film is poised to spark discussion when it arrives in theaters next spring.
The May 2026 release places the film in a competitive theatrical corridor, yet its recognizable source material and broad appeal could help it stand apart. For Angel, the deal reinforces its commitment to distributing films that blend mainstream entertainment with thoughtful storytelling, positioning Animal Farm as both a commercial play and a cultural talking point for audiences seeking substance alongside spectacle worldwide release.
