Anticipate These 8 Upcoming Broadway Shows in 2021

Witnessing the wonders of theatre plays in Broadway are something that many have been deprived of during the era of COVID-19. It was indeed saddening to hear that some shows have been suspended last year, and that they would  not be coming anytime soon as people are still trying to attempt navigating through these trying times.

It is understandable since it is one of the many sacrifices needed in order to prevent the further spread of the virus, and since preparations for the play take a lot of work. With a lot of postponements and cancellations that occurred, many fans have wondered when things can return to normal and when they can see their favorite Broadway shows.

However, it is indeed thrilling to hear, then, that Broadway is reopening this 2021 and by September, theatre can be open, allowing us to once again enjoy the shows we’ve come to know and love.

While some favorites still have yet to return and a lot of preparation is still in the works, many shows have announced the dates of their previews and opening nights, which gives us an idea when to expect and make plans as we purchase tickets.

Let’s take a look at these popular Broadway shows that will be returning to the stages:

Hamilton

If you’re even a casual fan of theatre production, you’ve surely heard of Hamilton, which has been beloved worldwide over the years due to its refreshing style and performances.

This production which is a sung-and-rapped-through musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda is worth seeing live, as it tells the story of American history told anew.

If you’ve been sad about missing it before, don’t fret since it has been announced that it will be back on September 14, 2021, which will be held at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. Through the site Ticketmaster, you can get your ticket and witness the much-adored production in person.

Moulin Rouge: The Musical

Fans have not ceased to be awed by the play Moulin Rouge: The Musical and it’s fortunate news that it will be reopening at the The Al Hirschfeld Theater on September 24, 2021, and will also be having a special dress rehearsal on the day prior, which is dedicated to New York’s Frontline Workers.

Many also cannot wait to be delighted by the captivating performances of the talented cast, with Aaron Tveit playing as Christian, Danny Burstein playing  as Harold Zidler and a new Satine by the time of the reopening. Dear Evan Hansen

This musical has gotten a lot of hype over the years, and had won the award for Best Musical at the 2017 Tony awards. The production has music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, with a book by Steven Levenson, with the story about one’s journey in high school. Fans will be glad to hear that the beloved musical will be reopening on December 11, 2021 which will be held at the Music Box Theatre.

It’s also worth noting that there is going to be a film adaptation of Dear Evan Hansen which stars the original lead Ben Platt on the 24th of September. Company

Many will be overjoyed by this revival that has long been awaited for fans of Company. Gender-flipped, Bobbie will be played by Katrina Lenk, and Patti LuPone is also back as Joanne. This iconic theatre production from Stephen Sondheim will have previews by November 15.

The Phantom of the Opera

The Phantom of the Opera has been announced to be opening once again on October 22, 2021, which will take place at the Majestic Theatre. The show has been the longest-running one in Broadway, and there is no denying that it has allured many fans through its run for many reasons, as they can’t get enough of the performances, telling the story which revolves around  a masked figure below the catacombs of the Paris Opera House.

The Lion King

Fans of The Lion King have rejoiced with the news that the show will be returning to Broadway on September 14, 2021. This musical based on the well-loved Disney animated flick about the life in the wild have got theatre fans hooked.

Mrs. Doubtfire

Mrs. Doubfire, a musical adaptation of the iconic Robin Williams classic is set to open once again with its previews being resumed on October 21, 2021, and with its opening night being held at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on December 5, 2021.

Hadestown

If you haven’t seen this 2019 Tony winner for Best Musical yet, you’ll be glad to hear that it will be returning on September 2, 2021. Hadestown has been a favorite of many, with its story telling a version of Orpheus and Euridyce, a well-known ancient Greek myth. There are lots of opportunities to see this at play, since by June 11 tickets are available, and the team behind the production have announced an NA tour on October 5, with an engagement spanning four weeks at the Kennedy Center.
