Apple revealed the initial details of the next major release of iOS, its operating system tailored for the iPhone, at Worldwide Developers Conference (WDC) 2024.

As anticipated, this marks a crucial moment for the mobile platform, with iOS 18 set to concentrate on artificial intelligence (AI). During the event’s introduction, Apple CEO Tim Cook expressed his excitement about introducing groundbreaking new intelligence capabilities. He hopes these advancements will inspire developers, delight users, and make their platforms smarter and more useful than ever.

Apple announced the integration of ChatGPT into Siri and various other system-wide interactions.

It can be read as well in Apple’s press release last June 11, 2024. “The release introduces all-new customisation options, the biggest-ever redesign of Photos, powerful updates for staying connected, and Apple Intelligence, the personal intelligence system,” they said.

As per Apple, they  previewed iOS 18, a significant update that includes enhanced customization options, the most extensive redesign of the Photos app to date, new tools for managing inboxes in Mail, and the introduction of Messages over satellite, among other features. Users can now arrange apps and widgets in any open space on the Home Screen, customize the buttons at the bottom of the Lock Screen, and quickly access additional controls in the Control Centre.

The Photos app will automatically organize photo libraries into a new single view with convenient collections for easy access to favorites. Mail will streamline inbox management by categorizing emails using on-device intelligence, and iMessage will feature new text effects. Additionally, leveraging the same advanced technology as current iPhone satellite capabilities, users will be able to communicate via the Messages app over satellite when cellular or Wi-Fi connections are unavailable.

iOS 18 also debuts Apple Intelligence, a personal intelligence system for iPhone, iPad, and Mac that merges generative models with personal context to offer highly useful and relevant intelligence. Designed with privacy as a priority, Apple Intelligence is seamlessly integrated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. It leverages the capabilities of Apple silicon to understand and generate language and images, perform actions across apps, and utilize personal context to streamline and speed up daily tasks.

“We are thrilled to introduce iOS 18. It is a huge release with incredible features, including new levels of customisation and capability, a redesigned Photos app, and powerful ways to stay connected with Messages. There are so many benefits for everyone,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering.

He added, “This release also marks the beginning of a tremendously exciting new era of personal intelligence with Apple Intelligence delivering intuitive, powerful, and instantly useful experiences that will transform the iPhone experience, all with privacy at the core. We can’t wait for users to experience it.”

iPhone users now have enhanced options for customizing the Home Screen, Lock Screen, and Control Centre. They can arrange apps and widgets in any open space on the Home Screen, including positioning them just above the dock for easy access or to frame a wallpaper. App icons and widgets can be given a new appearance with dark or tinted effects, and users can also enlarge them to create a personalized experience.
