Aspiring Preacher Canaan Hill Advances to ‘American Idol’ Top 24, Continues to Impress Judges

This season of American Idol continues to shine with stories of passion and purpose—but few are as inspiring as 17-year-old Canaan James Hill. The young aspiring preacher from Tennessee has officially earned his place in the Top 24, leaving both the judges and viewers moved by his heartfelt performances and unshakable faith.
Hill captivated the nation during his original audition with Earnest Pugh’s gospel classic, “I Need Your Glory.” The performance earned him one of the season’s coveted platinum tickets—allowing him to skip the first elimination round. But Hill hasn’t coasted on early praise. Instead, he’s continued to raise the bar, combining vocal mastery with a clear sense of calling.
This past Sunday’s Showstopper round brought yet another powerful moment as Hill performed “Never Would Have Made It” by Marvin Sapp. The reaction was immediate and overwhelming. Judges Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, and Lionel Richie rose to their feet as Hill’s voice soared. Audience members joined in, some lifting hands in praise, turning the studio into a space of reverence and celebration.
As the final note settled, Bryan ran onstage to embrace Hill, calling him “one of the best singers I have ever seen.” Richie followed with equally high praise, calling the performance “the greatest I have ever witnessed.” And Underwood, visibly moved, turned to the crowd and reminded everyone, “He’s 17!”
Hill’s age is perhaps the most surprising part of his journey. Despite his youth, he carries himself with the poise of someone far older. Before his performance, Hill shared how his love for music began in church at just six or seven years old. “My mother’s camera roll is full of videos of me on the pulpit, singing and preaching,” he recalled with a smile.
The singer’s strong spiritual roots are evident not only in his song choices but also in how he approaches the competition. “Being a platinum ticket holder adds a lot of pressure,” he admitted. “But I pray that I’ve met the judges’ expectations.” That prayer, it seems, was answered.
At the conclusion of the Showstopper round, Hill was called forward with three other contestants. The judges delivered the long-awaited news—he was officially in the Top 24.
Now, as the competition heads to Hawaii for its next phase, Hill remains focused. “I want to use this platform for what God has called me to do,” he said. “This isn’t just about a competition. It’s about ministry, it’s about music, and it’s about giving glory to the One who gave me this gift.”
Canaan Hill is more than a talented singer—he’s a young man on a mission. As the Top 24 prepare for their next performances at Disney’s Aulani Resort, viewers can expect Hill to continue bringing heart, humility, and spirit to every note he sings.
