The BET Awards 2025 marked a milestone year—its 25th anniversary—and delivered a show that lived up to its legacy of celebrating Black excellence across entertainment, music, and sports.
Hosted by comedian Kevin Hart for the second time, the night unfolded at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, filled with powerhouse performances, surprise tributes, and emotional wins.
One of the evening’s most emotional highlights was Jamie Foxx’s tearful appearance. Accepting his Ultimate Icon award, Foxx took a moment to reflect on his recent health battles, thanking his daughters for their strength and support. His heartfelt speech stood as a poignant reminder of resilience and legacy in the entertainment world.
Another standout moment arrived during Mariah Carey’s long-awaited debut of a new ballad, mesmerizing the audience and reminding fans why she continues to reign as one of music’s most enduring divas.
As expected, the competition across categories was fierce, but five artists emerged as the night’s top winners. Kendrick Lamar dominated the ceremony with five major awards, including Album of the Year for “GNX” and Video of the Year for his diss track “Not Like Us.”
His collaboration with SZA on “Luther” also earned Best Collaboration, underscoring his creative synergy and lyrical prowess. Lamar’s continued dominance reinforces his place at the apex of hip-hop’s storytelling tradition.
SZA shone just as brightly, winning Best Female R&B/Pop Artist and sharing honors in two collaborative wins alongside Lamar. Her powerful presence in both solo and team performances proved her versatility and staying power in today’s music scene.
Meanwhile, Chris Brown picked up Best Male Pop/R&B Artist and the Viewer’s Choice Award for his hit “Residuals,” confirming that his loyal fan base and slick performances remain unstoppable.
Doechii secured Best Female Hip-Hop Artist after a standout year that saw her rise with hits like “Denial is a River.” Her blend of edge and innovation positioned her as a fresh force among the genre’s heavyweights.
On the sports side, Simone Biles was named Sportswoman of the Year, honoring her record-breaking achievements and advocacy for mental health, while LeBron James earned Sportsman of the Year, cementing his legacy not just in basketball, but in cultural impact.
The BET Awards 2025 was more than just a celebration of achievements; it was a powerful reminder of the depth and diversity of Black excellence. From soulful tributes to bold debuts, each moment contributed to a legacy that continues to evolve.
As the curtains closed on Culture’s Biggest Night, one thing was clear—the artists, athletes, and actors honored this year are not just creating content; they’re shaping history.
