Bill Gates To Give Away Nearly All His Wealth within the Next 20 Years

Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft and one of the world’s richest individuals, has announced an ambitious plan to donate nearly all of his fortune within the next two decades.
Through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Gates aims to give away the vast majority of his remaining wealth—more than $200 billion by 2045. This marks a major acceleration in his philanthropic timeline and a profound commitment to global development and health.
Gates first began exploring philanthropy by reading extensively, including influential works such as Andrew Carnegie’s The Gospel of Wealth. Carnegie’s assertion that “the man who dies thus rich dies disgraced” strongly resonated with Gates.
Inspired by this principle, Gates has resolved not to let his wealth outlive him, choosing instead to use it for the betterment of humanity.
Over the past 25 years, the Gates Foundation has already distributed more than $100 billion, tackling issues such as global health, poverty, and education. Now, the plan is to double that amount by 2045, after which the foundation will officially close its doors.
This shift departs from the original clause in the foundation’s charter that it would sunset decades after the founders’ deaths. Gates, along with board input, decided that the foundation’s goals could be achieved more effectively within a compressed timeline.
The mission for the next 20 years is clear: reduce preventable deaths, eradicate deadly diseases, and help millions escape poverty. One of the foundation’s key goals is to ensure that no mother or child dies from preventable causes. This includes continued investment in maternal health, vaccines, nutrition, and health delivery systems in low-income countries.
Another critical objective is the elimination of infectious diseases such as polio, Guinea worm, malaria, measles, and possibly even HIV/AIDS. Gates is hopeful that technological breakthroughs, including single-dose gene therapies and next-generation vaccines, will be game changers. Efforts to reduce disease transmission through innovations like mosquito control are also in motion.
Beyond health, Gates has invested significantly in energy innovation through Breakthrough Energy and TerraPower, ventures that seek to generate affordable, clean energy. Though these companies may yield profits, Gates has pledged to reinvest any returns into the foundation. Similarly, he is actively funding Alzheimer’s disease research, an area of growing concern globally.
Gates emphasizes that this work is not done in isolation. Scientists, healthcare workers, governments, nonprofits, and other philanthropists all play essential roles. He sees his foundation’s role as one of support, catalyzing large-scale solutions through collaboration.
As Gates nears his 70th birthday, he remains actively engaged in his philanthropic mission. He believes that giving back is a shared responsibility and that with the right investments and partnerships, the next 20 years can significantly improve the lives of millions. His goal is not just to give, but to give effectively—and ensure that his wealth creates lasting impact.
