With the theme “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation,” the Department of Education (DepEd) has called for the responsible and ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI) during the celebration of this year’s International Day of Education (IDE), held at the DepEd Central Office on Friday.

Aligned with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s vision of harnessing the potential of Filipinos, DepEd emphasized its commitment to integrating AI and technology in education by collaborating with various EdTech companies.

“Let us champion the use of AI as a tool for empowerment, not replacement. Let us equip our youth with the wisdom to use it responsibly. Together, let us create a future where technology amplifies human potential rather than diminishes it,” Undersecretary and Chief of Staff Atty. Fatima Lipp Panontongan said.

At the event, DepEd highlighted its partnership with Khan Academy through Khanmigo, an AI-powered educational assistant.

“We are heading in the right direction by embracing the power of EdTech to address common learning delivery challenges,” Usec. Panontongan shared.

Observed annually on January 24, the IDE aims to garner support for education, encouraging individuals, civil society, and policymakers to take decisive steps toward ensuring access to primary and secondary education for all children and enhancing youth engagement in education.

“It is our duty to ensure that the next generation—be it Gen Z, Alpha, Beta, and beyond—is nurtured, informed, and inspired,” she noted.

The IDE 2025 celebration was attended by representatives from UNESCO, SEAMEO INNOTECH, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), UNICEF Philippines, and UNESCO Jakarta.

The event also featured exhibits on AI and education from partners such as FELTA, CISTEM, STI, Samsung, UNILAB, and iAcademy.
