London Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2025 was marked by a bold reinvention of the iconic Burberry trench coat, as creative director Daniel Lee showcased a collection that blended streetwear influences with a touch of Y2K nostalgia.
Departing from the brand’s tradition of presenting in a park, Lee opted for the brutalist setting of the National Theatre, where models descended the building’s grand staircase in front of a star-studded audience.
The collection paid homage to Burberry’s heritage while pushing the boundaries of the brand’s aesthetic. The classic trench silhouette remained, but Lee deconstructed and reimagined it using lighter fabrics like silk poplin and linen.
For women, the trench was reinterpreted as a cropped jacket, a halter cape, or a parka with silk organza faux feather trims, layered over delicate dresses and skirts to create a harmonious contrast between elegance and a sportier, almost military-inspired style.
The menswear offerings showcased an even stronger influence of streetwear, with lightweight materials and functional cuts. Flowing pants were paired with tartan zip-up jackets and sneakers or loafers, creating a tension between loose, fluid fabrics and pieces inspired by traditional British uniforms.
The collection also embraced the resurgence of Y2K fashion, with low-rise trousers, cargos, and capris that end below the knee.
Lee’s creative vision was further enhanced by the scenography, which featured British artist Gary Hume’s reinterpretation of one of his 1990s installations.
The foyer of the National Theatre was transformed with lilac carpeting and large green sheets pierced with geometric patterns, adding pops of color against the gray concrete pillars.
The designer’s note of intent emphasized that even “Burberry icons evolve,” and his palette of green, lilac, and orange is reflected throughout the collection, culminating in glamorous gold-sequined dresses.
Since joining Burberry in October 2022, Lee has been on a mission to modernize the British luxury brand, which has faced financial challenges in recent months.
In July, Briton Jonathan Akeroyd stepped down as CEO after a series of poor results, and was immediately replaced by American Joshua Schulman, former head of brands Michael Kors and Coach.
Despite some challenges, Burberry remains a cornerstone of British luxury, and Daniel Lee’s Spring/Summer 2025 collection has breathed new life into the brand, showcasing its ability to evolve while staying true to its heritage.
London Fashion Week also featured collections from other notable designers, such as Labrum London, Irish designer Sinead O’Dwyer, and Edeline Lee, a favorite of Victoria Starmer, wife of Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who attended the show.
As the fashion world looks ahead to the upcoming seasons, Burberry’s reinvention of the trench coat stands out as a highlight of the Spring/Summer 2025 season, demonstrating the enduring appeal and adaptability of this British fashion icon.
