The 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival commenced on May 13, ushering in 12 days of cinematic brilliance, red carpet glamour, and memorable moments on the French Riviera. A celebration of global cinema, Cannes 2025 opened with compelling premieres and familiar faces gracing the iconic Palais des Festivals.
The festivities began with elegance as the feature film jury made its grand entrance, walking the red steps with poise and presence. This yearâs main competition jury is led by French actress Juliette Binoche, joined by American actress Halle Berry, Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia, and South Korean director Hong Sang-soo, among others. Each jury member brought both star power and creative gravitas, setting the tone for the days ahead.
Indian auteur Payal Kapadia made waves not just with her presence but with her understated styleâa bold chequered pantsuit by Arjun Saluja paired with Amrapali jewels, embodying quiet confidence on the red carpet.
One of the most anticipated events of the evening was the presentation of the Honorary Palme dâOr to Hollywood legend Robert De Niro. The award was presented by Leonardo DiCaprio, marking a powerful reunion between two cinematic heavyweights. De Niroâs heartfelt speech emphasized the festivalâs enduring spirit and cultural relevance: âLibertĂ©, ĂgalitĂ©, FraternitĂ©.â
In a surprise move, Quentin Tarantino took the stage to declare the festival officially open. His unscripted appearance brought energy and nostalgia, reminding attendees of Cannesâ long-standing history with auteur cinema.
Opening the official screening lineup was Leave One Day (Partir un jour) by Amélie Bonnin. This French road drama about estranged siblings reuniting after years apart struck a chord with viewers. Subtle, tender, and introspective, the film set a heartfelt tone for the competition ahead.
The excitement continued on Day 2 with the world premiere of Mission Impossible â The Final Reckoning. Making his grand return to Cannes after three years, Tom Cruise walked the red carpet alongside director Christopher McQuarrie and the filmâs ensemble cast. Their group selfie on the red steps quickly went viral, encapsulating the joy of blockbuster cinema at Cannes.
The screening received a thunderous five-minute standing ovation. Director McQuarrie addressed the audience, thanking them for their support and recalling the filmâs challenging production during a pandemic and twin industry strikes. âThis response is why we do it,â he said. âThe big screen experience is why we do it.â
With just two days in, Cannes 2025 is already proving to be a remarkable editionâan elegant blend of cinematic excellence, star power, and timeless celebration.
