Celebrities Are Embracing Lent Prayer Challenges Through Hallow

Millions of Christian around the world once again entered the sacred season of fast—a time of repentance, reflection, and renewal. In recent years, a growing number of celebrities have publicly embraced Lenten prayer challenges through Hallow, a Catholicism prayer and meditation app that is helping believers build daily habits centered on Jesus.

Among those lending their voices are well-known figures like Chris Pratt, Mark Wahlberg, and Jonathan Roumie. Their message is simple yet powerful: stay prayed up. In a culture often dominated by noise and distraction, these public figures are encouraging people to pause, meditate on Bible, and draw closer to the Lord.
The app’s Pray 40 challenge invites users to commit to 40 days of guided prayer from Ash Wednesday through Easter. Inspired by Jesus’s 40 days in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-2), the challenge encourages believers to examine their hearts and grow in holiness. As the Bible reminds us, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you” (James 4:8). Lent is precisely that invitation—to return wholeheartedly to the Father.
Hallow’s journey began humbly, with only a handful of downloads in its earliest days. Today, it has reached tens of millions of users across more than 150 countries. What started as a small initiative has become a global prayer movement. This growth reflects a deep hunger for spiritual grounding in uncertain times. Psalm 46:10 declares, “Be still, and know that I am God.” Through guided meditations, Scripture readings, and reflections, the app helps believers practice that stillness daily.

Father Mike Schmitz, known for his Bible teaching ministry, has also joined the Pray 40 initiative, leading participants in thoughtful reflections throughout Lent. The focus is not merely on giving something up, but on becoming more like Christ. As Romans 12:2 urges, “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” True Lenten discipline shapes the heart, aligning it with God’s will.
For actors like Wahlberg and Roumie, involvement in the challenge is about more than publicity. It is about intentionally leading their hearts back to the Lord. Roumie, who portrays Jesus in the series The Chosen, has spoken about the importance of daily spiritual discipline. Wahlberg has emphasized that Lent is an opportunity to improve oneself—to be kinder, more patient, and more generous. These virtues echo Galatians 5:22-23, which describes the fruit of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Technology is often blamed for distracting believers, yet tools like Hallow demonstrate that it can also be redeemed for God’s glory. When used intentionally, even a smartphone can become a doorway to prayer. As 1 Thessalonians 5:17 instructs, “Pray without ceasing.” Daily prompts and guided sessions help believers weave prayer into busy schedules.

The celebrity involvement may capture headlines, but the true story is what God is doing in individual hearts. Lent remains a season of surrender. Whether through fasting, almsgiving, or guided prayer challenges, the goal is the same: to love like Jesus loves and to prepare our hearts for the joy of Easter morning.
