While some celebrities’ Jewish heritage is well known, others may come as a surprise. Beyond their accomplishments in film, music, and dance, these stars carry connections to Jewish culture that have shaped their personal journeys.

Here’s a closer look at five celebrities you might not have realized share Jewish roots.

1. Harrison Ford

Known worldwide as Indiana Jones and Han Solo, Harrison Ford has Jewish heritage through his mother, Dorothy Nidelman, a Russian-Jewish immigrant’s daughter. Ford once reflected on his background by saying, “I feel Jewish as an actor, but Irish as a person,” a nod to his father’s Irish Catholic ancestry.

This blend of influences has given Ford a unique perspective, balancing intense focus in his craft with a laid-back personal demeanor.

2. Barbra Streisand

An icon of both stage and screen, Barbra Streisand has long embraced her Jewish identity. Born in Brooklyn to Jewish parents, she attended an ultra-Orthodox girls’ yeshiva during her early years.

Streisand’s heritage shines through in many of her celebrated roles, notably portraying Jewish characters such as Fanny Brice in Funny Girl and Yentl in Yentl. Throughout her career, she has remained an enduring symbol of Jewish representation in Hollywood.

3. Billy Joel

The “Piano Man” himself, Billy Joel, was born to two Jewish parents, though his upbringing was complex. Raised in a largely Catholic neighborhood in Long Island, Joel attended Catholic mass and was even baptized.

Despite this, he faced bullying related to his Jewish background, an experience that ultimately fueled his resilience. Although Joel now identifies as an atheist, his Jewish roots remain an integral part of his family history.

4. Gwyneth Paltrow

Oscar-winning actress and wellness entrepreneur Gwyneth Paltrow was born to a Jewish father, director Bruce Paltrow, and a Catholic mother, actress Blythe Danner. Although she grew up with both religious traditions, Gwyneth deepened her connection to Judaism later in life.

In 2014, she announced her formal conversion to Judaism, solidifying the heritage passed down from her father’s side. Paltrow’s spiritual journey reflects a thoughtful embrace of her ancestry and traditions.

5. Paula Abdul

Pop icon and dance sensation Paula Abdul carries Jewish heritage from both sides of her family—her father of Syrian-Jewish descent and her mother a Canadian Jew. Although her early pursuits in dance and music kept her from completing a traditional bat mitzvah at a young age, Abdul remained spiritually connected to her roots.

In 2013, she fulfilled a lifelong dream by visiting Israel and celebrating her bat mitzvah at age 51. Reflecting on her pilgrimage, she described it as “the most magnificent trip” she had ever taken.
