Netizens were furious when a video of a Grab delivery rider made rounds on social media as a barangay official refused to let him make a delivery of “lugaw” saying that food item was “not essential.

Department of Interior and Local Government Undersecretary Epimaco Densing III went viral when he agreed with the official and stated that porridge is not essential. 

“Sabi niya kasi, non-essential si lugaw. Hindi talaga essential si lugaw. Pero kung sinabi niya, essential ang lugaw, ‘yun, tama ‘yun. Ang lugaw. Pero si lugaw ang binanggit niya. Non-essential talaga ‘yun, sa pananaw namin,” Densing stated.

Celebrities also took to social media to air their thoughts regarding the issue. 

Alessandra De Rossi jokingly said, “Lugaw who? Take a Lugaw me now, cause there’s an empty space.”

Barbie Imperial stressed that Lugaw should be legalized.

As for Ebe Dancel, he kept his message short and sweet, by posting the word ‘Lugaw’ with a heart emoji.

Dj Chacha took to her Twitter account and stated, “Sopas and Champorado is shaking now.”

While Maxine Magalona simply wrote Lugaw is essential, and uploaded a meaningful photo showing how important the dish is for those with limited resources.

Spanish-Pinoy actor Kuya Manzano also joined in and expressed on his Twitter account, “I’m a Spaniard and I love Lugaw.”

However,Karen Davila expressed on more serious note, her thoughts on the matter. She wrote, “The palace settles it – Lugaw is essential. But what is so disturbing to me  is the level of discourse with the local authority. Nagpaliwanag na, mali pa. Ang kawawa ang ordinaryong mamamayan, na nagtratrabaho at kailangang kumita ng pera.”
