This event was one for the books! Sen. Raffy Tulfo, Vicky Morales, and other media personalities won big at the 35th PMPC Star Awards for TV.
“Bigla ata akong nagkaroon ng stage fright,” said Sen. Raffy Tulfo as he went onstage to get his Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Broadcasting. One of the presentors was Rey Langit, who’s been in the industry for about 4 decades like he is. Tulfo thanked Langit, as well as the other presentor, Rocky Ignacio, a seasoned broadcast jounalist from PTV 4. He recalled his tandem with her named ‘Raffy Rocky’.
He also thanked those behind his program in TV5 ‘Wanted sa Radyo’, especially Odette, a beloved staff that is a familiar face for those who’ve watched Raffy Tulfo in Action often. “I’m truly very very very overwhelmed with joy receiving this award tonight precisely because it coincides with the 24-year anniversary of my radio program Wanted sa Radyo…January of 1998 when it all started,” said Tulfo. He said the program started out helping law enforcement track down wanted criminals, then branched out as an outlet for grievances against abusive employers, government officials, and those who deceive others.
“Ilang buwan na tayong hindi nagkikita and it feels nice seeing each other all over again,” said Morales as she accepted the award. She dedicated the award to her colleagues in the GMA News and Public Affairs Division “na pikit-matang sinusuong ang panganib para makapaghatid ng makatotohanang balita dahil yun po ang ating panata.” She also mentioned her family, with some of them like her husband joining her for the first time in an awards ceremony. She emotionally shared that she owes a debt of gratitude to her parents, who taught her that: “Integrity and kindness are the best legacies to give thanks for.”
In 2019, Morales has already been conferred the Lifetime Achievement Award herself for Excellence in Broadcasting by the PMPC Star Awards for TV. It is not surprising because excluding that and her recent award, she has won 47 more times. Tulfo, on the other hand, won 5 times prior, excluding the latest award he received.
Another news pundit, Kara David, won for the category of Educational Program Host (Pinas Sarap). “Makakaasa pa kayo na sa mga susunod na taon, lalo pa namin kayong bubusugin… hindi lang ang inyong mga sikmura pati na ang inyong mga mata, pero pati na rin ang inyong mga mata,” said David’s short but sweet speech. She’s also part of I-Witness: The GMA Documentaries’ victory, which won as the Best Documentary Program.
David received warm congratulations from the University of the Philippines Diliman College of Mass Communication, where she currently works as an Assistant Professor of the Journalism Department.
Other notable winners of the night were: Donbelle (Donny Pangilinan and Belle Mariano, German Moreno Power Tandem of the Year) tied with Mikee Quintos and Kelvin Miranda, Jodi Sta. Maria (Best Drama Actress, Ang Sa Iyo ay Akin), JM De Guzman (Best Drama Actor, Init sa Magdamag), Connie Angeles (Ading Fernando Lifetime Achievement Award), Huwag Kang Mangamba (Best Primetime TV Series), Primadonnas (Best Daytime Drama Series), Sylvia Sanchez (Best Drama Supporting Actress, Huwag Kang Mangamba), and John Estrada (Best Drama Supporting Actor, Babawiin ang Lahat).
Paolo Ballesteros won as the Male Star of the Night aside from accepting his trophy as the Best Male TV Host for Eat Bulaga. The three hosts of the awards show — Pops Fernandez, Aiko Melendez, and John Estrada, won Faces of the Night multiple times from different sponsors. Lani Misalucha performed during the opening number.
The 35th PMPC Star Awards for TV was held last January 28 at the Winford Manila Resort and Casino. The red carpet happenings as well as the awarding proper can be rewatched via the official Facebook page of the producer, Jamsap Entertainment Corporation.
