On December 3, 2024, Chanel unveiled its highly anticipated Métiers d’Art 2024/2025 collection against the enchanting backdrop of West Lake in Hangzhou, China. This stunning show, which celebrated the brand’s rich heritage and craftsmanship, was a testament to the artistry that defines the iconic fashion house.

The event not only highlighted Chanel’s dedication to traditional techniques but also paid homage to Gabrielle Chanel’s fascination with Chinese culture.

The choice of Hangzhou as the venue was deeply symbolic. Known for its picturesque landscapes and historical significance, West Lake served as a fitting stage for a collection inspired by the antique Coromandel screens that adorned Coco Chanel’s Parisian apartment.

These screens, which she cherished throughout her life, encapsulated her love for Chinese artistry and aesthetics. The runway itself was crafted from wooden planks that floated above the lake’s surface, creating an ethereal illusion of models walking on water as night fell, enhancing the dreamlike quality of the presentation.

Chanel’s Métiers d’Art collections are renowned for showcasing the extraordinary skills of its artisans. This year’s collection featured an array of luxurious materials including tweed, satin, and velvet, adorned with intricate floral embroidery and delicate embellishments.

The silhouettes ranged from sweeping coats and tailored jackets to elegant skirts and trousers, all designed to reflect a sense of movement and travel—a nod to the modern woman’s lifestyle.

The collection opened with striking black ensembles that mirrored the night sky, transitioning into gilded gold pieces embellished with feather trims. Each outfit told a story through its craftsmanship; intricate pleats and piping were expertly executed by ateliers like Lemarié and Lognon, while floral motifs embroidered by Lesage paid tribute to Coco Chanel’s enduring love for camellias.

Accessories played a pivotal role in this collection, with models showcasing travel-inspired bags and vanity cases that echoed the theme of exploration. Footwear included thigh-high boots and elegant slippers crafted from black patent leather, completing the sophisticated looks with a touch of modern flair.

The Métiers d’Art show is not just about fashion; it is a celebration of artistry and cultural exchange. The presence of over 1,200 guests, including luminaries like Tilda Swinton and Lupita Nyong’o, added to the event’s grandeur. Attendees were ferried to their seats on traditional wooden boats, immersing them in the serene atmosphere as traditional drum beats set the mood for the evening.

Chanel’s commitment to craftsmanship was further emphasized by the involvement of various artisans who contributed to this stunning collection. The event highlighted not only the beauty of the garments but also the stories behind them—each piece a reflection of meticulous work and dedication from skilled craftspeople across different ateliers.

As Chanel continues to navigate changes within its creative leadership—following Virginie Viard’s departure—this show signaled a moment of resilience and innovation for the brand.

The Métiers d’Art collection serves as a bridge between past and future, blending traditional techniques with contemporary design sensibilities. With whispers of new creative directions on the horizon, this collection sets a high bar for what is yet to come in Chanel’s storied legacy.
