Christopher Nolan is known for assembling powerhouse casts, and his latest project, The Odyssey, is no exception. The Oppenheimer and Interstellar director is bringing Homer’s epic poem to the big screen with a lineup of A-list stars, including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Robert Pattinson, Anne Hathaway, and Lupita Nyong’o.

But while the film is shaping up to be one of Nolan’s most ambitious yet, one major name won’t be joining the ensemble—Robert Downey Jr.

In a move that has surprised many fans, Robert Downey Jr. turned down a pivotal role in The Odyssey, opting instead to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. According to reports, Nolan had approached Downey Jr. for the role of Poseidon, the formidable god of the sea, but the actor declined due to his commitment to Avengers: Doomsday.

This marks a notable shift for Downey Jr., who delivered an Oscar-winning performance as Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer. His collaboration with Nolan was widely praised, making his absence from The Odyssey all the more unexpected.

While his return to Marvel is sure to excite superhero fans, it means he’ll miss out on one of the most anticipated cinematic adaptations of the decade.

At the heart of The Odyssey is Matt Damon, taking on the legendary role of Odysseus. This will be Damon’s third collaboration with Nolan, following his appearances in Interstellar and Oppenheimer. Known for his versatility and commanding screen presence, Damon seems like a fitting choice to portray the cunning Greek hero navigating his perilous journey home.

Joining him is Tom Holland as Telemachus, Odysseus’ son, stepping into a role that will further showcase his dramatic range beyond his usual action-packed performances. The cast also boasts an impressive lineup of talent: Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, and Lupita Nyong’o.

Production is already underway, with Nolan and his team transforming Morocco’s breathtaking Aït Benhaddou into the mythic landscapes of ancient Greece. Known for his preference for practical effects and grand-scale filmmaking, Nolan is expected to deliver a visually stunning adaptation that stays true to the sweeping scope of Homer’s epic.

The director’s meticulous attention to historical authenticity and practical set pieces suggests The Odyssey will be an immersive experience and treacherous voyages.

With a scheduled release date of July 17, 2026, The Odyssey is already shaping up to be a major cinematic event. Nolan’s reputation for crafting thought-provoking, large-scale epics ensures that this adaptation will be anything but ordinary.

While Downey Jr.’s absence may disappoint some fans, the star-studded cast and Nolan’s signature storytelling promise an unforgettable journey. As anticipation builds, audiences can only imagine how The Odyssey will redefine the classic tale for a modern era—bringing Homer’s legendary hero to life in a way only Christopher Nolan can.
