When God Calls: Why His Assignment Matters

Could Japan Become the ‘Land of the Risen Son’, Jesus? Superbook Spreads the Gospel

Japan is known worldwide as the Land of the Rising Sun—a nation celebrated for its discipline, innovation, and deep cultural traditions. Yet today, an animated series is stirring hearts and opening doors for the message of Christ to reach new generations.

Superbook, the CBN-produced series that brings Bible stories to life through animation, is now touching the lives of children and families across Japan, offering hope that this land may one day be called not only the rising sun, but the land of the Risen Son, Jesus.

For decades, Christianity in Japan has struggled to gain ground. Less than 2% of the population identifies as Christian, and Sunday school programs are scarce, with many churches lacking resources to engage children.

Pastor Makoto Kohhatsu of Kawasaki Church in Tokyo knows this challenge well. He recalls how, as a boy in the 1980s, watching the original Superbook planted the seeds of faith in his heart. Those stories became the foundation of his walk with God. Now, seeing the new generation of Superbook episodes on Japanese television, Pastor Kohhatsu witnesses children and even their parents stepping into church for the first time.

What makes Superbook unique is its ability to bring the Bible to life in ways that resonate with modern viewers. Stories of Jesus healing the sick, calming storms, and rising from the grave are more than just tales on a page—they are vivid encounters that speak to young hearts.

A child viewer expressed it best when she said, “I believe He can also do miracles in my life, like helping my classmates become good friends.” For many children, the program becomes the first time they hear the gospel clearly presented.

The impact extends beyond the youngest audiences. Superbook is creating bridges between generations. Some grandparents, who once watched the original episodes in the 1980s, now sit alongside their grandchildren, experiencing the timeless message together. What began as a pioneering anime-style project more than 40 years ago is now returning to Japan with renewed purpose: to make the Bible known in a country where it remains largely unfamiliar.

Superbook’s recent outreach efforts, including partnerships with local churches and ministry training programs, are paving the way for wider influence. Events such as Japan’s largest evangelistic gatherings have featured Superbook characters, drawing crowds and sparking interest. The goal is to expand its presence beyond major cities into local prefectures, ensuring that more children—and their families—can encounter the story of Jesus.

The question remains: Could Japan truly become the land of the Risen Son? While faith is often met with hesitation in a culture where many do not see themselves as sinners in need of redemption, Superbook is quietly shifting perspectives. Through the lens of engaging animation, the truths of Scripture are reaching hearts that might never have stepped inside a church.

Japan’s spiritual journey is far from over, but the seeds are being sown. From pastors who grew up watching Superbook to children now discovering Jesus for the first time, the vision is clear. In the land of the rising sun, the light of the Risen Son is shining ever brighter.
