After concluding his farewell tour, “La Meta” (The Goal), on Sunday night in his native land Puerto Rico, Daddy Yankee officially announces his retirement from reggaeton to fully commit to his religious faith, the rapper revealed.

In a comprehensive address following a spectacular rendition of his worldwide smash “Gasolina,” the 46-year-old vocalist declared his decision.

This iconic song played a pivotal role in propelling reggaeton into the global spotlight and catapulting him to mainstream success in 2004. He said, “My people, this day for me is the most important day of my life. And I want to share it with you because living a life of success is not the same as living a life with purpose…”

Even though he traversed the globe, garnered accolades, and received praise from fans globally, a sense of unfulfillment lingered within him for an extended period, as he conveyed to an enthusiastic crowd of over 18,000 at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico.

Even with the stylish sunglasses adorning his face under the spotlight, the tears rolling down his cheeks were apparent to the thousands of fans worldwide who closely observed him through the livestream. In his speech, Daddy Yankee referenced this Spanish Bible verse:

“What good will it be for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? That is why tonight, I recognize, and I am not ashamed to tell the whole world that Jesus lives in me and that I will live for him.” Daddy Yankee revealed his intention to commence “a new beginning” using his birth name, Ramón Ayala.

“All the tools that I have in my possession such as music, social networks, platforms, a microphone — everything that Jesus gave me — is now for his kingdom,” he said. “Thank you very much, Puerto Rico, and I hope that you walk with me in this new beginning.”

“To all the people who followed me, follow Jesus Christ, who is the way, the truth and the life.” “Just like Jesus, with his mercy, allowed me to travel the world, in your mercy, Father, I hope you allow me to evangelize the world from Puerto Rico. Amen.”

In his ultimate show, Daddy Yankee not only delighted his fans with well-loved reggaeton tunes but also conveyed a profoundly personal and transformative message about his faith and spiritual convictions. He underscored the significance of leading a purpose-driven life, distinct from the mere pursuit of success.

Acknowledging the presence of God in his journey, he declared his dedication to serving a higher purpose for “the Kingdom.”After the performance concluded, a multitude of drones illuminated the sky outside the Coliseo de Puerto Rico, creating a light display portraying a cross and the message “Cristo viene” (“Christ is coming”).

He also reiterated his decision and bid his farewell via Instagram post. It stated (translated in English), “Family: This day for me is the most important of my life… Tonight, I acknowledge and am not ashamed to tell the whole world that Christ lives in me, and I will live for Him. This is the end of one chapter and the beginning of a completely new one.”

“For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works.Matthew 16:26-27 Amen.”

Following the announcement, fans took to social media to express resounding support and admiration for Daddy Yankee’s decision. While the artist had previously acknowledged his Christian faith in interviews and public appearances, his Sunday night speech still caught fans off guard.

While Daddy Yankee has previously acknowledged his faith, his complete dedication to it signifies a significant new chapter in his life. This mirrors the paths taken by other Puerto Rican reggaeton artists such as Farruko, Héctor ‘El Father,’ and Voltio, who have also found solace in their faith.

Even the Puerto Rican-American singer Luis Fonsi said a farewell and good luck message to Daddy Yankee.

In English, “Last night, I had the privilege of accompanying the 🐐, the one who changed Latin music forever, in his farewell from the stage. It was very emotional to be there with you @daddy_yankee. I owe you a lot, bro, a lot! Enjoy this well-deserved rest; we will continue to enjoy and celebrate your music ALWAYS.”
