Liza Soberano makes her Hollywood debut in the horror-comedy film “Lisa Frankenstein,” which is produced by Focus Features and Universal Pictures International. She graced the premiere and afterparty, mingling with the cast and crew under the leadership of director Zelda Williams. The movie was shown in cinemas on February 7, 2024.
Featuring Kathryn Newton, recognized for her appearances in Big Little Lies and Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania, alongside Cole Sprouse, renowned for his roles in The Suite Life Of Zack & Cody and CW’s Riverdale, this movie represents their inaugural partnership as lead actors.
Penned by Diablo Cody, acclaimed for her Academy and BAFTA Award-winning screenplay for Juno in 2007, “Lisa Frankenstein” tells the tale of Lisa Swallows (portrayed by Newton) inadvertently resurrecting a charming corpse from the Victorian era, played by Sprouse, during a lightning storm. The storyline unfolds as they embark on a darkly humorous quest for love, happiness, and a few missing body parts. Set against a backdrop of the 1980s, the film presents a unique narrative of coming-of-rage romance, blending elements of comedy, romance, and fantasy. Soberano assumes the role of Taffy, Lisa’s stepsister.
In an interview, Soberano recalled how she got the role to portray Taffy. She said, “I met Zelda on a trip to LA, and she brought up this project. I was instantly hooked. It’s amazing because the day I met her was the same day the studio greenlit the project. When she found out it was a go, ‘They’ve got their main leads lined-up. They were looking to fill other roles. How about auditioning for one?’ I was like, ‘Sure, let me check out the script. If it’s something that interests me, I’m in.’ And when I saw Diablo Cody was on board, I just had to audition for it.”
Soberano expresses her enthusiasm and gratitude for the opportunity, noting that the film’s 1980s setting presents a fresh challenge for her in terms of styling with its distinctive hair and makeup. She describes the project as a long-desired opportunity, combining elements of horror, comedy, and romance in a single narrative—a type of movie she has always wanted to be a part of.
For the meantime, her beau Kapamilya Star Enrique Gil expressed his support for Liza. “Hopie (Liza) was so amazing, I know she’s funny but I wasn’t expecting this funny, she’s amazing, I hope you guys gonna watch it,” he said.
Recently, there were rumors of Enrique and Liza’s separation, but the former denied it. He said they decided to “distance” themselves for a while because Liza is busy pursuing her career abroad while he signed a contract with ABS-CBN to continue his local career. In fact, he has a comeback movie titled “I Am Big Bird” which will be showing in cinemas in the Philippines on February 14, Valentine’s Day.
