This Easter, “American Idol” offered viewers more than just entertainment — it delivered a moving celebration of faith and music that touched hearts across the country. Airing on April 20, the three-hour “Songs of Faith” special on ABC marked a significant moment in the show’s history, bringing worship and gospel music to the primetime stage like never before.

The evening’s standout performances began with judge Carrie Underwood, whose stirring rendition of “How Great Thou Art” was a powerful reminder of the roots that launched her own journey on “Idol” two decades ago. Her heartfelt performance set the tone for a night where faith took center stage, inspiring both the contestants and the audience.

Christian artist Brandon Lake, known for his anthems of worship, graced the stage alongside Jelly Roll for their emotional collaboration, “Hard Fought Hallelujah.” Lake, who is set to release his album King of Hearts this June, shared his gratitude for the opportunity, calling it “an honor” to perform on a stage he once found intimidating. His sincerity and humility resonated with viewers, adding a deeply personal layer to the night’s message of hope and perseverance.

CeCe Winans, one of gospel music’s most celebrated voices, also made a memorable appearance. Teaming up with former contestant Roman Collins, she performed the soul-stirring “Come Jesus Come,” drawing a wave of applause and emotional reactions from the live audience. The moment felt both timeless and timely, perfectly fitting the Easter celebration.

The evening’s special also highlighted the growing presence of faith among the contestants themselves. Canaan James Hill, a 17-year-old aspiring preacher, delivered a moving rendition of Le’Andria Johnson’s “Better Days,” while Kolbi Jordan’s heartfelt performance of “Amazing Grace” further underscored the spiritual theme. Contestants like Hill, Baylee Littrell, and Breanna Nix have consistently showcased their Christian faith throughout the season, creating an atmosphere of inspiration and unity.

Judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie added their voices to the celebration. Bryan performed his 2024 song “Jesus Bout My Kids,” offering a personal and heartfelt testimony through music. Richie, in a unifying moment, led the Top 24 contestants in a group rendition of “Eternity,” echoing the night’s overarching theme of everlasting hope.

The bold focus on faith did not go unnoticed. Simon Lythgoe, co-creator of “American Idol,” praised ABC and Disney for embracing a spiritual message on one of the most sacred days of the year. Reflecting on earlier seasons when faith was often kept subtle, Lythgoe called this Easter special a “powerful and inspiring shift.”

With contestants, judges, and special guests all embracing the spirit of worship, the Easter special served as a refreshing reminder of the beauty of faith in the entertainment world. It wasn’t just a night of performances — it was a night where music, testimony, and celebration came together to uplift the soul.
