As Typhoon Carina swept through the Philippines in July 2024, leaving a trail of devastation, several Filipino celebrities stepped up to provide much-needed relief and support to affected communities. Their efforts have not only brought immediate aid but also inspired many to contribute to the recovery process.
Kapamilya actor Gerald Anderson was among the first to respond to the crisis. Known for his roles in action-packed dramas, Anderson took on a real-life heroic role by helping rescue a family stranded in their home in Quezon City. Videos of Anderson wading through floodwaters to transfer a child to safety quickly went viral, showcasing his bravery and dedication. His actions reminded many of his similar efforts during Typhoon Ondoy in 2009, proving his consistent commitment to helping those in need.
Heartthrob Donny Pangilinan joined the relief operations organized by Angat Buhay, a non-governmental organization. Pangilinan was seen preparing meals at Urban Chick Maginhawa, ensuring that those affected by the typhoon received warm food.
He also leveraged his influence to gather donations from commercial brands he endorses, assembling relief packs for distribution. Pangilinan’s involvement highlighted the importance of community support and the power of collective action.
Celebrity couple Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes were also at the forefront of the relief efforts. The couple, along with their two children, repacked and distributed over 700 relief packs to flood victims.
They collaborated with the GMA Kapuso Foundation and the Philippine Navy Civil Military Operations Group to ensure the efficient distribution of aid. Rivera and Dantes’ hands-on approach and dedication to helping others have set a powerful example of family and community solidarity.
Kapuso stars Jennylyn Mercado and Dennis Trillo spearheaded a donation drive campaign to support flood victims. The couple used their social media platforms to raise awareness and gather contributions from their fans and followers.
Their campaign successfully collected essential items, including food, clothing, and hygiene products, which were then distributed to affected families. Mercado and Trillo’s initiative demonstrated the impact of using one’s platform for social good.
Heart Evangelista, known for her philanthropic work, organized relief distribution through the Senate Spouses Foundation Inc. (SSFI). Evangelista and her fellow senatorial wives distributed over 2,000 relief kits containing food, vitamins, and hygiene necessities at Sto. Niño Elementary School in Marikina.
Additionally, Evangelista extended her efforts to the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), assisting in the rescue and care of abandoned and homeless animals affected by the typhoon. Her comprehensive approach to relief work underscored the importance of addressing both human and animal needs during disasters.
Singer-actor Ronnie Liang, a reservist of the Philippine Army, actively participated in rescue operations and relief efforts. Liang joined the 1302 Ready Reserve Battalion in Quezon City, helping to rescue stranded individuals and pack relief goods. His dedication to serving his country in times of crisis has earned him widespread admiration and respect.
These celebrities’ contributions have not only provided immediate relief to those affected by Typhoon Carina but have also inspired countless others to take action. Their efforts highlight the spirit of bayanihan and the power of using one’s influence for the greater good. As the Philippines continues to recover from the aftermath of the typhoon, the collective efforts of these celebrities and many others serve as a beacon of hope and resilience.
