In 1995, TV series Neon Genesis Evangelion aired and became a cultural phenomenon. Rebuild of Evangelion, the film series that retells the original work, was then released beginning 2007, planned, written, and directed by Hideaki Anno. The three movies featured in the series, namely Evangelion: 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone, Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance, and Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, accomplished significant success and attracted a new fan base.
While the series’ concluding movie, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, was postponed twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it eventually premiered on March 8, 2021, and received overwhelming support, achieving a final box office revenue of 10.28 billion yen and total attendees of 6.73 million viewers.
