Harnaaz Sandhu was crowned the winner at the 70th Miss Universe 2021 which was held in Eilat, Israel.
The 21-year-old who hails from Punjab, India, took the winning spot, followed by Nadia Ferreira from Paraguay (1st runner-up), then South Africa’s Lalela Mswane (2nd runner-up). She was later on crowned by Miss Universe 2020 winner Andrea Meza from Mexico.
One may note that Harnaaz bagged the title 21 years after Lara Dutta’s winning moment in 2000.
During the competition, the candidates were asked, “What advice would you give to young women watching on how to deal with the pressures they face today?”
Harnaaz wowed the crowd when she replied, ““The biggest pressure the youth of today is facing, is to believe in themselves. To know that you are unique makes you beautiful. Stop comparing yourselves with others and let’s talk about more important things that are happening worldwide.”
“Come out, speak for yourself, because you are the leader of your life. You are the voice of your own. I believed in myself and that is why I am standing here today,” she added.
It can be recalled that Harnaaz was named Miss Max Emerging Star India in 2018, and won the Femina Miss India Punjab title in 2019. She was also one of the top 12 contestants at Femina Miss India 2019.
Apart from being a beauty queen, Harnaaz is also an actress. She starred in the movie ‘Yaara Diyan Poo Baran,’ in 2021, directed by Upasna Singh Bhardhwaj, and appeared in the film ‘Bai Ji Kuttange’, directed by Smeep Kang, which was released during the same year.
