Most people rely on work and their business, thinking that their efforts alone will make them thrive in life. What we Christians should remember though is that God is our ultimate provider and we cannot count on ourselves nor other people if we want to succeed.

So what does one do in order to make it? Ever heard of tithing? If not, let’s take a look at some verses from the Bible which talks about tithing.

Leviticus 27:30

“Every tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the trees, is the LORD’s; it is holy to the LORD.”

  • This means that one-tenth of the land’s produce, grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, is holy to God and belongs to Him.

Genesis 28: 20-22

“Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear 21 so that I return safely to my father’s household, then the Lord[a] will be my God 22 and[b] this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.”

  • Here we see that Jacob made a personal commitment to the Lord, promising that he will give back by tithing.

Proverbs 3: 9-10

“Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.”

  • We must bear in mind that everything we receive is a gift from God, but these gifts still belong to our maker. Therefore what was given to us must be utilized for His honor and glory.

Numbers 18:26

“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.”

  • This verse expounds on how God urged His people to support the Levites and give a tithe to them.

Malachi 3: 10 NIV

“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.”

  • This is the only time when the Lord gives His people permission to test Him through tithing. He assures his people that once they tithe He will shower them with blessings beyond their imagination.
