Finally, Jason Dy is part of the Star Music family! This is the beginning of a new chapter in his music career as this Friday, March 3, he will release the music video of ‘Ulit-ulit’, his initial project as ABS-CBN Star Music family’s newest member.
One may note that he started writing the song back in 2016. “Gusto ko siyang i-perform. Gusto ko siyang sayawan. Gusto ko siyang gawing upbeat,” he says regarding transforming the ballad to a danceable beat. He also clarified that this is not exactly based on his personal experience, since the song talks about being made a fool of by a person, but still coming back to that person over and over again.
“This song is very dear to my heart since I wrote it myself. I just want people to know that this is kinda my baby,” said Jason. He was very hands-on with the project and was communicating a lot with his producer. Jason was also very particular with the ad libs and the back-ups. “Instead of going back to the studio, dito ko na lang sa bahay irerecord,” he added.
“I am excited to perform this live kasi hindi ko pa siya naperform ever. I have a couple of ideas up my sleeve,” Jason shared. 8 years after winning ‘The Voice’, he still feels nervous when he watches ‘The Voice Kids’. “Feeling ko ma-go-gong pa rin ako,” he laughed as he said this.
At the moment, Jason believes that all of his dreams have come true so far, which motivates him to give his full attention and make the conscious decision to be on his toes. He also learned the lesson of humility and noticed that those who last in the industry are those who are “magaan katrabaho…professional.”
The promising singer makes sure to be friendly to the people behind the scenes as well. “Kung wala sila, hindi mabubuo ang show,” Jason said. On another note, the genre of music he still wants to explore is rock or pop rock: “Gusto ko naming maexperience yung mga heavy guitars. Parang nasanay ako na pop and r&b…para may edge naman. I want to translate my sensibilities to the rock genre.” He shares that the biggest influence in his music is the resurgence of 70’s disco pop like the one in Dua Lipa’s music video.
Meanwhile, Jason stated that he plans to celebrate his anniversary with his Dyfenders, the official fanbase. “I shot the music video last September pa.” His last solo project was in 2020, but aside from this, he has written a couple of songs already. He targets to release a mini EP by June 2023.
As for acting, he is pretty much open for more gigs since filming MMK. “Sobrang naenjoy ko siya kahit hindi ko siya wheelhouse, hindi ko siya comfort zone.”
Jason calls music his second nature. “I am just really happy that it resonates with people, na may mga taong natutuwa at tumatanghilik sa music ko.” He acknowledged alternative platforms for musicians in releasing their creations: Tiktok, Youtube, Facebook, etc. “As long as they will continue to have me and continue giving me projects like ASAP, I will always be with ABS-CBN. Hangga’t kinukuha nila ako, I will always be with ABS.”
The artist also recalled how his Coach Sarah Geronimo was really instrumental in his the Voice journey. What he can’t forget about her was when she lent him her in-ear monitors during the finals night. “She didn’t have to do that but she did.”
About past setbacks and losing out in audtions: “Up to a certain extent masakit na rin ‘pag lagi kang narereject eh.” But then everything fell into place and his trust in the Lord never wavered.
The Kapamilya singer carried on regarding the positive change he experienced since winning ‘The Voice'”Mas hindi na ako masyadong may impostor syndrome.” But he was able to overcome this by thinking that if he keeps comparing himself to others, nothing will happen.
Jason is set to do a tour with his fellow Cornerstone artists this June which is the ‘All Star Concert’ and will perform with artists such as Piolo Pascual, Catriona Gray, Sam Milby, Inigo Pascual, Yeng Constantino, Erik Santos, KZ Tandingan, Kyla, and Zephanie.
Some of what the country’s “Prince of Soul” considers his career highlights are his ‘The Voice performance’ and his stint with David Foster during his ‘HitMan’ tour in 2015.
When it comes to relationships, he is more of the patient type, giving second or third chances: “Hindi ako ma-confrontational na tao kaya minsan kahit na may nararamdaman na ako, di ko sinasabi. Feeling ko pasensiyoso ako na tao. Matagal bago akko magalit. Matagal bago ako mafrustrate.”
Apart from his career and relationship, Jason also opened up about his renewed fashion style: “Last year, I made a conscious decision to leve; up my image, my appearance, my clothing.” He also does this in line with his music. “Kailangang maganda din yung damit natin,” he added.
