WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE STOP TREATING PEOPLE AS DISPOSABLE?

John the Baptist’s Preaching: A Call to Prepare for Jesus

John the Baptist’s message was more than a call to repent. Discover how his preaching prepared people to recognize, follow, and trust in Jesus.

Imagine standing in a crowd in the wilderness, surrounded by people who have come from different places to hear one man speak. There is no polished stage, no comfortable church building, and no promise that his message will be easy to hear.

John the Baptist simply tells them to repent.

His preaching was bold enough to confront people about their sins and urgent enough to make them consider whether their lives truly reflected their relationship with God. But John was not trying to build a following for himself. He was preparing the way for Jesus.

That makes the story of John’s preaching more than an account of what happened before Christ’s ministry. It is also an invitation for Christians today to examine how prepared we are to follow Jesus.

Repentance Should Change How We Live

John’s message began with repentance. He was not asking people to feel temporarily guilty and then return to their old habits. He wanted them to turn away from sin and demonstrate that change through the way they lived.

Luke 3:8 records John saying, “Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.”

Those words challenge a common temptation in Christian life: separating what we believe from how we behave. It is possible to know the Bible, attend church, and speak about faith while still holding tightly to attitudes and choices that need to change.

John reminds us that genuine repentance has visible consequences. It affects how we treat people, respond to temptation, use our influence, and make everyday decisions.

Repentance, then, is not about becoming perfect overnight. It is about being willing to turn back toward God when we recognize that we have gone the wrong way.

John Shows Us What Humility Looks Like

John could have easily made himself the center of attention. Crowds were coming to him, listening to him, and responding to his message. Yet he consistently pointed beyond himself.

Mark 1:7 records John saying, “After me comes one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.”

John understood that his role was to prepare people for someone greater: Jesus.

His humility offers a powerful lesson for Christians. Faith is not ultimately about making ourselves look spiritually impressive. Our purpose is to point toward Christ.

Even our service, ministry, and influence can become distractions if they draw more attention to us than to God. John shows that spiritual leadership can be powerful without becoming self-centered.

Preparing Our Hearts for Jesus

The story of John the Baptist ends up asking a deeply personal question: What needs to change in us before we can follow Jesus more faithfully?

His preaching calls us to take faith seriously—not as a label, but as a relationship with God that shapes the way we live. It encourages us to make room for repentance, prayer, humility, and obedience rather than becoming comfortable with a faith that never challenges us.

John prepared the way for Christ by calling people to wake up, turn around, and get ready.

His message still carries that urgency.

Jesus is not simply someone we learn about in the Bible. He is the center of the gospel and the One John spent his ministry pointing toward. And perhaps the most important lesson from John’s preaching is that preparing the way for Christ begins with allowing Him to change our hearts.
