Katy Perry is set to embark on an extraordinary journey beyond Earth, joining an all-female crew on Blue Origin’s New Shepard mission this spring.
The flight, led by journalist and philanthropist Lauren Sánchez, will mark a milestone in commercial space travel as the first all-women crew to fly together since the Soviet Union sent Valentina Tereshkova into orbit in 1963.
The star-studded crew includes CBS Mornings co-host Gayle King, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, bioastronautics researcher Amanda Nguyen, and film producer Kerianne Flynn.
The six women will board Blue Origin’s fully autonomous suborbital spacecraft, experiencing a few minutes of weightlessness and breathtaking views of Earth as they cross the Kármán line, the internationally recognized boundary of space.
Blue Origin’s New Shepard program has already launched 52 people into space, including high-profile figures such as actor William Shatner and Good Morning America co-host Michael Strahan.
This upcoming mission, designated NS-31, is part of the company’s effort to expand access to space travel, with an emphasis on breaking barriers and inspiring future generations.
Lauren Sánchez, who played a key role in assembling the crew, expressed excitement about the historic mission. “This flight will undoubtedly prove to be a life-changing experience for each of us,” she said. “I’m honored to be with such an incredible group of explorers.”
Sánchez, a licensed pilot and vice chair of the Bezos Earth Fund, aims to use this mission to inspire young people to pursue careers in science, technology, and exploration.
For Katy Perry, the upcoming spaceflight represents another bold adventure in her already illustrious career. The pop icon, known for hits like Firework and E.T., expressed enthusiasm about joining the mission. “If you had told me I’d be part of the first all-female crew in space, I would have believed you. Nothing was beyond my imagination as a child,” Perry said.
Perry, a longtime advocate for creativity and pushing boundaries, hopes her journey will inspire young dreamers, including her daughter, Daisy Dove. “She wants to encourage future generations to reach for the stars—literally and figuratively,” Blue Origin stated.
Each member of the NS-31 mission brings a unique background to the flight. Aisha Bowe, a former NASA rocket scientist and CEO of STEMBoard, has dedicated her career to expanding opportunities in technology.
Amanda Nguyen, a bioastronautics researcher, has contributed to space medicine and scientific research. Kerianne Flynn, a film producer, has worked on projects that highlight influential stories, while Gayle King, a veteran journalist, is embracing this new challenge as a way to expand her horizons.
The upcoming mission will not only be a historic event in spaceflight but also a significant step forward for commercial space tourism. As Blue Origin continues to expand its passenger flights, NS-31 will serve as an inspiration for future generations of explorers, proving that the dream of space travel is within reach for more people than ever before.
