Making God Our Greatest Priority—Above Everything Else

SHARE
Have you ever watched a child completely absorbed in a game, utterly oblivious to the world around them? Their focus is so intense that nothing else seems to matter. Imagine if we approached our relationship with God with that same unwavering devotion—making Him our ultimate focus above everything else.

In the hustle of life—careers, responsibilities, social obligations—it’s easy for God to become a part of our routine rather than the center of it. Yet, Scripture reminds us of the importance of putting God first. In Matthew 6:33, Jesus commands, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” This isn’t just a suggestion; it’s an invitation to reorder our priorities, placing God above all worldly concerns.
Making God our greatest priority begins with intentionality. It’s about starting our days with prayer, meditating on His Word, and seeking His guidance in every decision. Psalm 37:4 assures us, “Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” When God becomes our delight, our perspective shifts—what once seemed urgent may fade, and His purposes take the lead in our lives.

Practical steps can help anchor this priority. Consider your daily schedule: is there room for uninterrupted time with God, or are we filling our hours with distractions? Proverbs 3:6 tells us, “In all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Submission isn’t passive; it’s an active choice to invite God into every part of our lives, from mundane tasks to monumental decisions.
Even our ambitions should reflect a God-centered life. Colossians 3:23 encourages, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” Elevating God above career, reputation, or even personal comfort transforms how we approach each day. Every success becomes an opportunity to glorify Him, and every challenge a chance to deepen our trust in His plan.

Making God our greatest priority also affects our relationships. When we put Him first, we love others more fully and selflessly. 1 Corinthians 10:31 reminds us, “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” Our interactions, choices, and service to others reflect the priority we place on Him.
In the end, prioritizing God is not about restriction but liberation. It frees us from the anxiety of striving for worldly recognition and anchors us in His eternal purpose. Like the child absorbed in play, let us lose ourselves in the joy of God’s presence, making Him the first thought of our day, the center of our hearts, and the ultimate aim of our lives.
When we do this, everything else falls into perspective. Our work, ambitions, and relationships gain clarity, not because they become less important, but because God becomes undeniably central—our anchor, our joy, and our eternal priority.
