The rest of the Philippine delegation, which included athletes from various sports such as boxing, weightlifting, athletics, and fencing, were also given ₱1 million each as a token of appreciation for their participation and representation of the country in the global sporting event.
“This is a testament to the resilience and determination of the Filipino spirit,” President Marcos said in his speech. “These athletes have shown the world what we are capable of, and we are immensely proud of their accomplishments.”
The homecoming celebration continued on Wednesday, August 14, with a grand parade through the streets of Manila. Thousands of enthusiastic fans lined the streets, waving Philippine flags and cheering on their heroes as they passed by. The parade, organized by the Manila local government, started at the Aliw Theater and traversed major thoroughfares such as Roxas Boulevard, Taft Avenue, and Adriatico Street before culminating at the historic Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.
At the sports complex, the athletes were greeted by an adoring crowd and treated to a special program honoring their achievements. Carlos Yulo was once again the center of attention, as he received an additional ₱2 million cash incentive from the Manila LGU.
“This is a moment we will never forget,” said Nesthy Petecio, her bronze medal glinting in the afternoon sun. “We did this for the Philippines, and to see the outpouring of support and love from our countrymen is truly humbling.”
The homecoming celebrations underscored the nation’s immense pride and gratitude towards its Olympians. The athletes’ success in Paris has not only brought glory to the country but has also inspired a new generation of sports enthusiasts to pursue their dreams and represent the Philippines on the world stage.
As the festivities drew to a close, President Marcos left the athletes with a message of encouragement and hope: “You have shown us what is possible when we believe in ourselves and work together towards a common goal. Continue to inspire us, and know that the entire nation stands behind you.”
