Mike Nawrocki has spent decades using humor and engaging storytelling to introduce children to biblical lessons. Best known as the co-creator of VeggieTales and the voice behind the lovable Larry the Cucumber, Nawrocki is once again bringing faith-filled entertainment to young audiences with his latest animated series, The Dead Sea Squirrels

The series, which launched on Minno last February 14, blends wit, adventure, and timeless biblical truths—continuing Nawrocki’s mission of making Scripture accessible and fun for children.

For over two decades, VeggieTales captivated families with its creative retelling of Bible stories through animated vegetables. Nawrocki’s character, Larry the Cucumber, became a household name, bringing laughter and valuable moral lessons to kids around the world.

The series was praised for its ability to present biblical themes in a way that resonated with children while entertaining parents as well. From Daniel and the Lion’s Den to Josh and the Big Wall, VeggieTales made Scripture engaging, using humor and memorable songs that still echo in many childhoods today.

However, after VeggieTales ended its original run in 2015, Nawrocki was eager to embark on a new creative journey—one that would allow him to explore more New Testament stories. That idea eventually led to The Dead Sea Squirrels, a concept that had been percolating in his mind for years.

Unlike VeggieTales, which primarily focused on retelling individual Bible stories, The Dead Sea Squirrels introduces an original narrative that connects past and present.

The series follows Michael, a 10-year-old boy who, while exploring caves near the Dead Sea, stumbles upon two ancient squirrels that were miraculously preserved in salt. When a rainstorm rehydrates them, they come back to life—revealing themselves as Merle and Pearl Squirrel, two first-century creatures who witnessed the ministry of Jesus.

What follows is a delightful mix of comedy and biblical wisdom, as Merle and Pearl attempt to navigate the modern world while sharing their firsthand accounts of Jesus‘ teachings. Throughout the series, Michael and his friends learn important lessons about faith, kindness, honesty, and courage—all woven into an entertaining storyline.

Bringing The Dead Sea Squirrels to the screen has been a different journey from VeggieTales. With streaming platforms now dominating the entertainment landscape, Nawrocki found a strong partner in Minno, a Christian streaming service committed to God and faith-based children’s content.

The first season, spanning 13 episodes, introduces audiences to the quirky squirrel duo while exploring core themes of Scripture in a fresh, engaging way.

“I feel God has orchestrated this whole thing to get it to screen and get it to families,” Nawrocki shared, expressing his excitement for the show’s launch. With a stellar voice cast that includes Matthew West, Phil Vischer, and Bart Millard, the series promises to deliver the same charm and heart that made VeggieTales a beloved classic.

As Nawrocki continues his work in Christian entertainment, The Dead Sea Squirrels stands as a testament to his unwavering commitment to sharing biblical truths with humor and creativity.
