Everything Everywhere All at Once (EEAAO) gets the top plum at the 95th Academy Awards or Oscars 2023, for winning the Best Picture, as well as taking home almost all of the major awards.
The directing and writing duo of Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, who took home the Best Director as well as the Best Original Screenplay trophies, helmed this absurdist comedy-drama film distributed by A24, the latter having garnered a reputation in the recent years for churning out niche and high quality content.
The film got 11 nominations at the Oscars 2023, and won 7 of them, which are these (aside from those abovementioned): Best Actress (Michelle Yeoh), Best Editing (Paul Rogers), Best Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan), and Best Supporting Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis).
Brendan Fraser won in the Best Actor category for his comeback role in The Whale, an American psychological drama film about an introverted English instructor who’s really overweight and wants to repair his bond with his teenage daughter. The tall and formerly hunky actor whose most famous work is his lead roles in The Mummy franchise, suddenly disappeared from the screens after a booming career in the 90’s.
EEEAO made history at the Oscars 2023 Yeoh is the first woman of Asian descent who won in this category, and considered as the second woman of color to bag the accolade, after Halle Berry in 2022. Coincidentally, both women formerly represented their countries in the Miss World competition.
This is also the first time two Asian actresses were nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Category in a single year, because Stephanie Hsu was nominated for EEAAO and Hong Chau for The Whale. Technically, three persons of color were nominated for the above mentioned category, as Angela Bassett, a black actress of American descent, was also included.
Quan, prior to being involved in the record-breaking film, revealed that he had difficulty getting work as an actor. Understandably, even the lady reading the envelope which contained his name as the winner was suddenly moved to tears as she announced Quan’s name. Aside from being her first Academy Award win, this is also the first nomination for Curtis, who got famous as a scream queen by topbilling films in the slasher genre during the early part of her career.
All Quiet on the Western Front, a German film which was nominated for Best Picture in other reputable award-giving bodies, won in the International Feature Film category. Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, which received reviews at both ends of the spectrum, won as the Best Animated Feature Film.
Naatu Naatu, an Indian Telugu-language song, which was the theme song of the film RRR, won in the Oscars 2023 for Best Original Song while Navalny, a film about the events which led to the poisoning of the Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, took home the Best Documentary Feature Award.
The ceremony took place in March 12, 2023, at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, and was organized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
