Prada Reportedly Among Suitors Interested in Versace

Prada is reportedly among the interested suitors for Versace, following news that Capri Holdings has put the luxury fashion brand up for sale. This development has stirred excitement in the fashion industry, as Prada is one of the most respected names in the luxury market.
Capri Holdings, the parent company of Versace, has faced difficulties in recent years, with declining revenues and operational missteps affecting its brands, including Versace and Jimmy Choo.
In 2024, Versace, which represents a fifth of Capri’s revenue, saw a significant drop in sales, with its revenue falling to $1.03 billion, down from $1.1 billion the previous year. Its operating margin also declined, signaling potential difficulties within the brand. Versace has been known for its opulent, maximalist aesthetic and its iconic Medusa motif, but analysts believe that a potential turnaround could be a challenge for any new owner.
Prada, on the other hand, has been thriving in the luxury market. Under the creative direction of Miuccia Prada, the brand has maintained an intellectual, minimalist style that resonates with a broad range of luxury consumers. The company’s sales have remained robust, with a reported 18% growth at constant currencies in the third quarter of 2024.
The Italian newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore reported that Prada is considering making a bid for Versace, with Citi advising the brand. Prada has a history of working with Citi on financial projects, including a dual-listing initiative that was put on hold. However, experts remain skeptical about Prada’s true interest in acquiring Versace.
Some analysts, such as Luca Solca from Bernstein, argue that Prada may struggle with the differences between the two brands. While Prada’s aesthetic is minimalist and intellectual, Versace’s is bold and maximalist, making integration potentially difficult. Solca also pointed out that Prada has faced challenges with previous acquisitions, citing its sale of Jil Sander and Helmut Lang in the late 1990s as cautionary tales.
Despite these concerns, Prada’s potential interest in Versace could bring new life to the brand. Analysts suggest that a turnaround would require significant effort, including a reorganization of Versace’s distribution strategy and a possible renewal of its aesthetic. If Prada moves forward with an acquisition, it would likely face a steep challenge in reviving Versace’s fortunes and aligning it with Prada’s own vision for the future.
For Capri Holdings, the sale of Versace could be a way to address its financial struggles. The company has already hired Barclays to explore strategic options. Other private equity firms and rival luxury groups are also reportedly evaluating a bid for the brand.
As of now, Prada has not commented on the matter, and it remains unclear whether the company will move forward with a formal bid. The outcome of these discussions will likely have a significant impact on the future of both brands, and it will be interesting to see how this potential acquisition unfolds.
