Prince Philip, who had been by Queen Elizabeth the II’s side throughout her 69-year reign, passed away at the age of 99.

Buckingham palace came out with a statement on Friday and said,  “His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle. Further announcements will be made in due course. The Royal Family will join with people around the world in mourning his loss.”

Philip had been admitted in a hospital earlier this year for treatment for a pre-existing heart condition, after which he also received treatment for an infection, but returned to Windsor in early March.

It can be noted that he was the longest-serving royal consort in British history.

When the news of his Majesty’s passing made rounds on the internet, netizens took to social media to pay their condolences. 

One wrote, “Just shy of 100, guess they sent him home to rest and be at home for the end. I just feel so sad for the queen. Everyone from her time is gone. Just her kids and their kids left.”

Another stated, “A devoted member of  the royal family, who gave his wife the queen much strength to carry her burden, as head of state. Rest in peace.”

Meanwhile, one netizen stressed, “Gosh, it’s an end of an era. What a shame he didn’t quite get to a hundred. Glad he was a t home though, for his last few weeks with his family.”

A netizen from the Philippines also paid hhis respects to the royal family and said, “From my family in the Philippines, our condolences. Rest in paradise. His royal highness Prince Philip.”
