A new chapter is opening in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer universe with Hulu’s upcoming reboot, which will introduce a fresh face as the next vampire slayer.
This highly anticipated series revival will see 15-year-old Ryan Kiera Armstrong take on the lead role, stepping into the shoes of the chosen one while sharing the screen with Sarah Michelle Gellar, who is returning as Buffy Summers. The reboot promises to blend the nostalgic spirit of the original show with a new story for today’s audience.
At just 15 years old, Armstrong is stepping into the lead role as the next generation’s chosen one, a high school student destined to battle dark supernatural forces in the fictional town of Sunnydale.
The young Canadian actress began her career with a recurring role in Netflix’s Anne with an E and has since built an impressive résumé that includes appearances in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, American Horror Story, and Firestarter. This casting highlights Armstrong’s rising star power and strong acting chops that impressed producers and Gellar herself.
Sarah Michelle Gellar, who executive produces the new project, shared a heartfelt video on Instagram announcing Armstrong’s casting. In the clip, Gellar asked Armstrong if she was ready to help save the world, to which Armstrong responded with a teary-eyed “Good.”
Gellar then invited her to become the next chosen one, echoing the original series’ memorable opening line: “In every generation, there is a chosen one.” Gellar praised Armstrong’s “emotional intelligence and talent” at such a young age, also noting her radiant smile that can “light up even the darkest room.”
The reboot, directed by Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao (Nomadland), promises a modern take on the Buffyverse while respecting the narrative legacy of the original show. Written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, the pilot episode will introduce a new slayer who balances the supernatural with everyday teenage life. The Zuckerman sisters expressed their enthusiasm for Armstrong’s casting, affirming that “there is no question in our mind that she is the chosen one.”
Originally premiering in 1997 and running through 2003, Buffy the Vampire Slayer revolutionized television by blending horror, action, and drama with coming-of-age themes. Its groundbreaking storytelling style, featuring complex character development and long narrative arcs, influenced countless TV shows that followed. The original Buffy, played by Gellar, became a cultural icon for her battles against vampires and demons while navigating high school struggles.
The new series aims to build on this foundation, bringing Buffy’s world to a new audience while also giving longtime fans the thrill of seeing Gellar return in some capacity. The show will be produced by 20th Television and Searchlight TV, with additional executive producers including Gail Berman, the Kuzuis, and Dolly Parton’s company Sandollar, which was involved in the original series. Fans can look forward to the pilot as it begins production later this year, signaling that the fight against darkness is far from over.
