The Day God Was Silent: What Black Saturday Teaches Us About Waiting

Discover what Black Saturday teaches about waiting, faith, and trusting God in silence. A reflective look at Holy Week and the hope in Jesus.

Black Saturday, which is at times forgotten in comparison to the significance of Good Friday and Easter Sunday, is a day of stillness. It finds a place in the middle of Holy Week, a place where sadness is felt and hope is nowhere in sight. For the Christian, it is the time Jesus spent in the tomb, and the world was in a state of confusion and did not have the answers. It is, in a way, the time when God was silent.

But the silence has a lot to say, especially about the moments in our lives when our prayers seem to go unanswered and our faith is put to the test. The Bible does not hurry past this time. It urges the Christian to stay in it and understand the importance of the wait.

When Silence Feels Like Absence

After the crucifixion of Jesus, the disciples were in a state of confusion, fear, and loss. Everything they knew about the gospel seemed to fall apart. The promises they had come to believe in seemed doubtful.

This is the same thing that happens in our lives. There are moments when we pray but there is no answer. It is during these moments that we tend to think God is far from us. But the Bible says, “The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him.” (Lamentations 3:25)

Waiting is not the same as being abandoned. It is in such moments of waiting that our faith is being refined. On Black Saturday, we learned that the silence of God is not the same as inaction. There is always something behind the scenes. God is always at work.

The Purpose of Waiting in Faith

Waiting is one of the most challenging aspects of the Christian journey. It requires trust without immediate evidence. On Black Saturday, nothing visibly changed. The stone remained sealed. The silence continued.

But this day was not the end of the story.

God was preparing something greater than anyone could see. The resurrection was coming, even if no one yet understood it. This reveals an important truth: faith is not built only on what is seen, but on trusting God’s promises even in uncertainty.

Another verse captures this posture, “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him.” (Psalm 37:7) Being still is not passive. It is an active decision to trust. For Christians, this means continuing in prayer, holding onto faith, and believing that God’s timing is purposeful—even when it feels delayed.

From Silence to Hope

Black Saturday ultimately points forward. It reminds us that silence is often the space between promise and fulfillment. While the disciples could not yet see it, resurrection was already near.

This truth reshapes how we view their own seasons of waiting. Silence does not have the final word—God does.

In the context of Holy Week, the stillness of Black Saturday deepens the joy of Easter Sunday. Without the waiting, the victory would not carry the same weight. Without the silence, the voice of hope would not be as powerful.

For those navigating quiet seasons in life, this day offers reassurance. God’s silence is not empty; it is filled with purpose. The same God who raised Jesus from the grave is present even in moments that feel uncertain.

Black Saturday teaches that waiting is not the end of the story. It is often where faith grows the most—quietly, deeply, and with the promise that hope is on the way.
