Squid Game is an immensely popular, mega hit South Korean survival drama TV series available for streaming on Netflix.
In June 2022, an official announcement was made regarding the second season, along with the introduction of a reality competition series called Squid Game: The Challenge. Filming for the second season commenced in July 2023.
However, Netflix remains tight-lipped about the details of the upcoming second season of its highly successful Korean series. Nevertheless, it has verified the addition of more renowned Korean actors to the cast. In the second season, Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo return to their roles as the main characters and adversaries in the deadly survival contest.
The roster of new cast members also comprises Yim Si-wan (known for “The Attorney” and “Emergency Declaration”), Kang Ha-neul (“Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet”), Park Gyu-young (“Attack the Gas Station”), Lee Jin-uk, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim (“Kim Ji-young: Born 1982”), Lee David (“The Terror Live”), Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, Jo Yuri, and Won Ji. It can be seen on their YouTube channel.
Netflix announced in Korea on Tuesday that the new narrative will center on Gi-hun as he ditches his intentions of going to the U.S. and embarks on a pursuit with a specific motive. Earlier images from Season 2 depicted Lee’s character Gi-hyun sporting beetroot red hair dye.
The company verified that Hwang Dong-hyuk, the first Asian to win the Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series at the Primetime Emmy Awards, will continue in his roles as director, writer, and producer for the second season. Production is being handled by Firstman Studio.
Hwang Dong-hyuk’s “Squid Game,” consisting of nine episodes, premiered in 2021. The series, depicting a lethal competition among financially struggling participants vying for KRW45.6 billion, emerged as a monumental success for Netflix. It garnered 14 Emmy nominations, including a historic nod for Best Drama Series for a non-English-language show, ultimately securing six wins.
Anyway, the streaming platform continues to maintain ambiguity regarding the release date of “Squid Game Season 2.” It was then reiterated that it will be available “sometime in 2024” while unveiling a significant lineup of new Korean films, series, and reality shows.
Here are the netizens’ reactions and comments:
