K-Drama original Squid Game has now become Netflix‘s most popular series to date! The streaming service announced on Tuesday that the series garnered 111 million viewers since its release on September 17.
According to a ranking site called FlixPatrol, it is now the top show worldwide on Netflix’s charts for Most Watched shows.
Squid Game has reached 1st place in the United States for four straight days, and it also topped charts in Argentina, South Korea, Bolivia, Brazil, Australia, Canada, Chile, Columbia, Hong Kong, Germany, Japan, just to name a few.
The series is centered on 456 debt-ridden individuals, who join a rigorous survival game that has a 45.6 billion won prize at stake. However, the contenders are pitted against each other and losing players are killed in the process.
In an online press conference, Lee Jung-jae, who portrays the character of the chauffeur Seong Ki-hun, told the Korea Herald that he found the changes in emotions and personality of the individual characters in an extreme situation captivating.
“Ki-hun was an interesting character to play. Though he faces countless struggles in his life, Ki-hun is very optimistic and humorous, and able to make friends in a life-threatening survival game. I was surprised to see how I portrayed Ki-hun,” Jung-jae pointed out.
It can be recalled that Netflix’s Head of Global TV, Bela Bajaria, stated during a Q&A at the International TV Academy that she was confident that non-English-language show could possibly become the most watched series on the streaming service. Turns out she was right!
