Michael Iskander’s portrayal of David in House of David has been more than just a career milestone—it has profoundly impacted his faith and understanding of Scripture. The Prime Video series, which premiered on February 27, delves into the life of King David, and Iskander’s experience in the role has given him a deeper perspective on biblical narratives, human nature, and the power of Christian faith.
For Iskander, stepping into the shoes of David meant immersing himself in the complexities of a man described as “a man after God’s own heart” (1 Samuel 13:14). He found himself resonating with David’s duality—his unwavering devotion to God yet his struggles and shortcomings.
“I think David is one of the most interesting people because there’s so much duality in him,” Iskander said. “He’s the epitome of what it means to be human—to make mistakes but to truly have a heart for God.”
The role required more than just acting skills; it led him to a personal journey of studying the Bible with fresh eyes. Rather than seeing biblical figures as distant, almost mythological characters, he began to view them as real people with real struggles.
One of the most significant ways House of David has changed Iskander is in how he approaches his own faith. He spoke about Proverbs 3:5-6—“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding”—as a guiding principle he’s come to embrace more fully.
“You’re making a TV show, and it’s really fun … but the reason is to glorify Him, and to honor Him, and to put Him first,” he explained. This realization helped him put his career, life, and challenges into perspective.
One of the most powerful scenes in the series is David’s legendary battle with Goliath. While many view David as a fearless warrior, Iskander took a different approach to the scene, exploring the emotions that must have accompanied such a moment.
“I always thought of David as being so courageous … but there’s none of that without fear,” he noted. “Finding all the stakes of what it means to be the only person from your entire people to choose to go up against the scariest man they have ever faced—it makes you ask, ‘Are you truly willing to give up everything to protect the ones you love?’”
This insight influenced how the scene was filmed, emphasizing not just David’s bravery but also his faith-driven reliance on God’s strength.
Ultimately, Iskander hopes that House of David helps viewers connect with the Bible in a more meaningful way.
“As long as you see human beings in front of you—the Bible come to life—my job is done,” he said.
For Iskander, playing David has been a faith-deepening experience—one that has brought him closer to God and given him a renewed appreciation for the timeless power of Scripture.
